Black Clover is a really conventional and straightforward story, but I think that's a strength rather than a weakness.
The characters being "flat" and "predictable" is a good thing in this case because Tabata isn't trying to subvert anything or surprise the audience in most cases. He's cementing these characters further and reinforcing why we already love them.
Even the characters with big twists to them never suddenly start acting differently (unless they're mind controlled) but their past actions just suddenly start making more sense.
I know this sounds like a simple thing, and it really is, but Tabata consistently knocks it out of the park at this.
Black Clover is just good. It's not good for any special reason and it doesn't have some it factor, but it's just been good across the board so far, and that's more than can be said for most modern shonens at the 267 chapter mark.
