It's not deep in the least, it's just a typical bad early 00s adaptation with pretentious directing to distract viewers from its rushed pacing and unfinished plot. The manga has none of the artsy stuff from the anime, and it's much better for it because it actually focuses on plot and characterization instead of navel-gazing and faux-symbolic nonsense.

This show and shit like gantz came out at the perfect time to garner unearned praise and attention. The spread of broadband internet allowed a primitive form of on demand anime piracy websites to emerge that allowed edgy 12 year olds to watch shows like this that had rape and gore or whatever and then tell everyone at school so they could go watch it as well. not that EL was perfect but it was an interesting show at that time since comparatively gorey shows (the thread mentions Gantz, but think Berserk or Kite) weren't aimed towards younger people and had a smaller audience range. I think /a/ forgets how bad Japan had/has it with mental health discussions, which the anime takes on in full in a hyperbolic taboofest. The effects of bullying, being the odd one out, wanting to kill yourself, being an orphan, these were not easy topics at the time especially over there, and still don't have answers today.

Its why it became the favorite of women online, because the show is able to decently navigate, in a short-form episode format, highly emotional topics with some what of empathy and understanding towards them.
