It was never, ever “deep” whatever that is supposed to even mean. Just because the opening made your 12 year old brain feel horny and a little sad and confused and you were only able to understand some of it because again, you were 12, created this mass illusion that Elfen lied was somehow supposed to be some esoteric, profoundly deep story when in actuality it’s just a horror sci-fi story with titties and crazy Japanese powers. It’s schlock, it’s camp and it’s b-movie shit, never this biblical misunderstood gem.

It was never praised for being deep. Everyone only talked about how edgy and gory it was, and how it was the first anime like that for many people. The only "deep" thing about this anime is the title.

It's not deep in the least, it's just a typical bad early 00s adaptation with pretentious directing to distract viewers from its rushed pacing and unfinished plot. The manga has none of the artsy stuff from the anime, and it's much better for it because it actually focuses on plot and characterization instead of navel-gazing and faux-symbolic nonsense.

If the story had been from Nana's point of view rather than Lucy's, then Lucy could have become an actually tragic character. Having Nana interact with Nyuu's friends and struggling to reconcile the need to eliminate Lucy when Lucy may very well no longer exist would carry more pathos.

>However, with Parallel Paradise, I did jump on the trends at the time because I needed to pay off the mortgage for the house I’m currently living in.

>He said that the creation of the series resulted in him saving enough money to cover the mortgage debt.

Upon accumulating the funds, Okamoto decided against immediately paying off the mortgage, citing its low interest rate. He instead decided to invest the money in stocks.

This proved to be a poor decision as he subsequently lost several million yen. He reflected on the decision, indicating that knowing the outcome, he really should have just paid off the mortgage straight away.

He added that the mortgage still hasn’t been paid back.

>“As a result of selling my soul, I did save up enough money to pay off the mortgage. But once I actually had the money, I thought that rather than paying off a mortgage with an interest rate that’s practically nothing, it might be more profitable to invest this money instead. So, I invested it in stocks and, sure enough, lost several million yen. Knowing this now, I really should have just paid off the mortgage straight away (I still haven’t paid it back).“

Elfen Lied is a better work than anything that has come on its own genre. It being remembered years after it release proves it. Only contrarian fais call it edgy when it has more layers than any recent show. It's a well crafted and directed show and I will never not like it. Fuck contrarians and their shit taste.

This show and shit like gantz came out at the perfect time to garner unearned praise and attention. The spread of broadband internet allowed a primitive form of on demand anime piracy websites to emerge that allowed edgy 12 year olds to watch shows like this that had rape and gore or whatever and then tell everyone at school so they could go watch it as well. Also the OP/ED for this show in particular was one of the first viral videos on YouTube around like 2006.

its a weird circular problem where older fans say the idea of the show was bad but can't expand what that means beyond what it looks like, and nugen fans saying the show was bad because of what it looks like with no nuance

not that EL was perfect but it was an interesting show at that time since comparatively gorey shows (the thread mentions Gantz, but think Berserk or Kite) weren't aimed towards younger people and had a smaller audience range. I think /a/ forgets how bad Japan had/has it with mental health discussions, which the anime takes on in full in a hyperbolic taboofest. The effects of bullying, being the odd one out, wanting to kill yourself, being an orphan, these were not easy topics at the time especially over there, and still don't have answers today.

Its why it became the favorite of women online, because the show is able to decently navigate, in a short-form episode format, highly emotional topics with some what of empathy and understanding towards them.

It's all good, fren.
Man, I should maybe rewatch this show now. It's only like 12 episodes, fuck it.
I'm also a sucker for weird romances where they're friends as a child, get separated with no guarantee of seeing each other again, then somehow bump into one another years later. And then Elfien Lied decided to throw amnesia into the mix. And this one especially doesn't make sense because Kouta should seriously fucking hate Lucy with every single fiber of his being. How did that development into feelings like a day after he got his memories back?
