not that EL was perfect but it was an interesting show at that time since comparatively gorey shows (the thread mentions Gantz, but think Berserk or Kite) weren't aimed towards younger people and had a smaller audience range. I think /a/ forgets how bad Japan had/has it with mental health discussions, which the anime takes on in full in a hyperbolic taboofest. The effects of bullying, being the odd one out, wanting to kill yourself, being an orphan, these were not easy topics at the time especially over there, and still don't have answers today.
Its why it became the favorite of women online, because the show is able to decently navigate, in a short-form episode format, highly emotional topics with some what of empathy and understanding towards them.
