It got introduced to Japan a century ago and they needed a traditional team sport after WW2, thus baseball became tradition. Now you have guys like Ohtani and they'll probably inspire that entire Asian region because of him and their baseball infrastructure.

The issue with Ohtani is that how long can he keep up this type of peak performance? There's no question he's special, but he's already 30 with multiple surgeries on his arm. Ichiro was much more of a shonen style underdog, because he was this string bean that just straight up mashed hits for a quarter century. Ohtani is a genetic Adonis with an injury history that will only get worse with age.
