I'd say boruto is more the wasted potential. You have all these questionable concepts in the original naruto like the ethics of child soldiers that go unaddressed and could be explored more. During the end with naruto and sasuke fighting over ideals on how world peace should be established either through democracy or dictatorship, i was kind of hoping boruto would address how unrealistic naruto's dream was and perhaps see him fail at his dream. But it gets ignored instead for more alien tree battles.
