Yes. In fact Saber consistently was THE jobber class in the VN and Zero. A good portion of the Bad Ends happen because she is arrogant and needs Shirou to tardwrangle her. In Zero she either gets outsmarted (Diarmuid) or external reasons gave her an advantage (Iskandar covering for Waver, Lancelot running out of mana).
Ironically Mordred is the better servant because she actually listens to her Instincts and fucks off in unfavorable situations.

Jokes aside I think the reason the families think Sabers are the best is more because they tend to be gated by the stats requirements. So usually this means an old age hero, therefore good Mystery and NP. Other heroes have wider range to without a proper catalyst you may get someone really bad. I imagine in the first few wars something like that happened.
Whereas all subsequent ones everyone used catalysts so most other classes also came with powerful servants like Medusa.

No, I’m agreeing there. While prep time is an issue, Medea, Gilles, Avicebron and technically Semiramis all became threats that warranted multiple servants to defeat. The Magic Resistance and Weak Mooks summon disadvantage quickly get circumvented with quantity and quality as the war progresses.
That’s without even getting into FGO.

There is NOTHING in the VN that says at all that the Cavalry Classes are bad or that it’s purposeful.
No, the families didn’t tailor the goddamn containers to be bad. No, they didn’t specifically select bad ones either. No, there isn’t any intention here.
Some anonymous people made theories about it and then they parroted it to this day.
I read the VN, there isn’t anything like that. And then I sought the scenes the system is explained and the HGWs are recounted for good measure, and none of that again.
Hell, the reason Saber is considered the “best class” is because they have high base stats and made it to the finals in the four preceding wars. Lancers and Archers aren’t seen as any better than the Cavalry classes, they are only constants. And again, it isn’t because the families tailored or set this up.
Nobody that spreads this has any anecdote or screenshot to back themselves and usually devolves to arguing with theories to justify the headcanon.

If we don't count all the Extra Classes FGO invented (it'd be Foreigner if we did) I'd say Lancer. There is something about their combination of martial power, skill and agility that just appeals to me.

The strongest Sabers are really strong, but the weakest Sabers are incredibly inferior. If you fail to get your hands on Sigurd or Fergus, you might end up landing yourself with a real shitter like Saber Gilles de Rais or Chevalier d'Eon.

It's not specifically the Assassin class that was good. It's because all the derivative Holy Grails were modeled after the Einzbern Grail, it meant that every single Assassin was a Hassan. The Hassans are some of the best Assassins ever, the creme of the crop. While every other Master is pooling all of their life savings to get their hands on a halfway decent catalyst, the Assassin class GUARANTEED that you would get one of the best assassins in all of human history.

Hassans are only weak in comparison to top-tier monsters like Cu Chulainn or even Medea. But do you seriously believe that every single Master in every single knock-off Holy Grail War was able to get their hands on a good catalyst? Hassan of the Hundred Personas may be mediocre for a Hassan, but they're unlikely to lose to the likes of Mozart or Boudica.

It has some weird design decisions though. Lancer is the only class that A) doesn't have multiple standard class skills, B) doesn't excel at a specific class skill or C) has a unique class skill. Compare to the other classes:

>Rider: Riding*, Magic Resistance
>Caster: Territory Creation**, Item Creation**
>Assassin: Presence Concealment**
>Berserker: Madness Enhancement**

All Lancer has is Magic Resistance, and it's generally inferior to what Sabers have.

You aren’t wrong but I see them more of rarities. All classes have a good number of good servants but (before we got people like Okita) the conditions for Saber were a good statline + good magic resistance.
Most people sword users with those conditions are people from older eras when there was more magic around. And when you are in an older era to become famous you usually need a really good feat to standout so that increases the likelihood of a good NP. Think about it: if you are in an era there are monsgers rampant and magic everywhere you likely will have more power than sword users from a more modern army. And when those things are common, the guy that becomes famous here to the point of becoming a Heroic Spirit will either be a superhuman for their standards, rack up quite the killcount or have something unique like a Holy Sword.
There is nothing stopping you from summoning people like Deon or Gilles but but they really standout compared to the rest. I used Okita as an example earlier but at least she comes with an unblockable sword technique.
So like, imagine the first Holy Grail War that their ritual devolved into conflict. They likely had no idea what they were doing either before combat (quite possible since the idea of exterminating masters instead came from the outsiders they invited in the 2nd HGW). I doubt they got good catalysts then. If you all are summoning as is there is a way higher chance the other classes can roll shitters than Saber (and the master of Assassin won’t even think of killing masters).

Well, this is all a theory to justify the “best class” idea. The HGWs we witness everyone is using catalysts so the Saber doesn’t really standout as supposed to and that made me puzzled. Hell more often than not there is either someone with better skills or NPs than the Saber around.
