What's the authors' motivation to write these school arcs?
I'm currently watching ancient magus bride - the whole second season is a giant school arc.
I preferred the short mythological arcs of the first season.
School arcs are a way to quickly introduce lots of characters, but they are just tedious for all the lame drama.
Same with Frieren - I liked the characters in the exam arc, but story-wise it was just meh.

It's also a tried and tested trope where you don't have to explain much because everyone has been to school so you can in theory just work on character writing without having to focus much on the setting

IMO rewatchability suffers because there are a lot of flashbacks during the action and events of the current story our characters are in. On first watch this is fine as it weaves exposition into the story and gives the viewer more information. On rewatch the events grind to a halt as characters deliver information we already know. It's especially bad in this show because the cuts are so jarring during the action sequences
