If you're in Japan at around the end of August / start of September, they'll be airing the movie in cinemas for the 4th anniversary. Check it out, especially if you have never seen the movie in a proper theatre before.
Hold up, Kirin actually talks in this one. With his mouth and all.
>>279664050She's more of a symptom that the show could've been something truly amazing if it wasn't so comittee-directed. If the show were allowed to have a less generic artstyle and wasn't mandated to inclulde a short-haired genki girl with a pin and her black haired deuteraognist who has a 50% chance of being voiced by Mimorin as the lead like every other all-girl cast anime, the show wouldn't have had to twist itself into a pretzel trying to justify Karen as the lead. The second movie tried to rectify this in post and mostly succeeded, but even then they could've just made an incredible story from the getgo without her.

>>279670090Kek nice try, ESL-kun. I'm not a shipper and the closest thing I have to a favorite character is Nana, the undisputed most interesting and liked character of the franchise. Nana fits perfectly as the primary antagonist/heel character to the show while Claudine and Maya are fine as the "overpowered" rival characters with hidden depths (mostly on Maya's side). Karen's the most basic and uninspired part of the cast for the sake of "playing it safe" and having that be your main character is a flaw of many Japanese works, Revue isn't unique in that regard. However there's proof that there was more concept to Revue than the usual anime, which is why it's a shame that it had to be executed as a standard anime project instead of a more experimental work in the undistilled vision of Furukawa.

>>279671655Karen haters really piss me off. They hate her and say sheโs a bad character without putting in the effort to understand her. I can forgive that take if someoneโs only seen the 12-episode series, since Karen barely feels like a full character there. But the movie gives her a lot more time and development. Most people just brush those scenes off and then blame the show for making her writing weak, even though her writing in the movie clearly has more depth.
Karen has spent her whole life working toward becoming a stage actress because of her promise to Hikari. From elementary school to high school, sheโs been gaining experience nonstop. Her backstory doesnโt fully come together until you see that scene with the Giraffe and Hikari standing on the platform.
โThrowing away the joys of ordinary, the fun of girlhood.โ
That line sums up Karenโs character. She gave up the joy of youth for the sake of her craft, for the sake of becoming a Stage Girl. And that reflects real-life people who give everything to acting or the entertainment industry. Itโs a brutal path. Even if youโre talented, the risk is high. Some end up in their fifties with no savings, still scraping by because they do it for the love of the craft.

That final scene is a meta reference. I canโt remember the exact source, so correct me if Iโm wrong, but itโs said to reference Koyama Momoyo (Karenโs voice actress) and her very first voice acting audition. She started quite young as an idol and wanted to try something new, so she took a leap and gave voice acting a shot. Karenโs white shirt outfit matches what Koyama wore during that audition.

Karen in the movie becomes an acceptable character but any of the cast could've had the exact same development.
>Throwing away the joys of ordinary, the fun of girlhoodThat's all of them. Hell, even Junna has more of that to her since she's less talented than Karen and came from an equivalently normalfag background like Karen and Mahiru.
I noticed that the movie completely ignored all the surreal plot of the show and that it was a lot more enjoyable because of it
unless I didn't understand the ending
>>279679256the movie is what the audience wanted
>>279672836Why is it wrong for someone to continue to dislike Karen even after viewing the movie? Sure the movie fixed her but the anime makes up much more of one's time with the fandom that how bad she was in the anime cannot be ignored. Maybe it would have been better if the movie came only a year after the anime instead of 3 years.
I always thought Karen was great. I will try my best English major impersonation and say people don't really like or understand Karen because she's not the main character, the main character in the anime is Hikari, and the story is mostly being told following Karen.
Now this might sound retarded, but
And then for the movie, Karen is unambiguously the main character, to whom Hikari is playing the supporting role, while all the other girls tie up their own loose ends in the background, more or less.
I've grown to appreciate the B-gumis chattering and all the lead up to the second half of the movie much more on subsequent watches, too.

>Sure the movie fixed her but the anime makes up much more of one's time with the fandom that how bad she was in the anime cannot be ignored. She wasn't bad. She was lacking motivation. And she had her reasons for that.
I don't understand this. With other titles, you folks clap your ears more the more pathetic protagonist is.
>>279680910The giraffe is the audience. And flammable.
>>279680937Anime in general seems to have a serious problem with certain main characters. They're often slabs who have no real distinction beyond maybe sharing traits of other characters to a lesser extent but we're supposed to root for them because they got the most heart or some other vacuous nothing statement. They'll spend most of the series with a gormless look on their face, have some last minute moment of apotheosis were we're told they're the best and just because they're the main character.
>>279680937>With other titles, you folks clap your ears more the more pathetic protagonist is.Way to assume that people who don't like Karen are the same people who then love pathetic protags from other anime.
>>279680910Nope. It already got what it wanted in the TV show.
>>279681003so hikari really just fucked off after that?
what is her problem
>>279678597>"Throwing away the joys of ordinary, the fun of girlhood">That's all of themI'm the anon. And of course it's a "no shit" situation for all of them, even I know that. But that doesn't take away from her character just because she shares the same struggles as everyone else.
>>279679342>would have been better if the movie came only a year after the anime instead of 3 yearsI really donโt get the point of arguing when the sequel movie already fixed the issue. If you still hate her even after understanding her character, you do you. Karenโs appeal to me is that sheโs super relatable. After watching the supplementary material like the Live Stage stories, Iโd sum up her character like this: Karen speaks to viewers by being the one who hesitates and feels unsure about the future in a coming-of-age story.
>>279681025Yeah. It's autism but she has a similar problem to Karen in the movie but is no where near as thorough as Karen.
She is, surprisingly, captivated by Karen the same way Karen is to her and became scared of being her fan. More important to know is that she wasn't confident about herself as a stage girl in Starlight without Karen and was mesmerized by her.
From there, there is no concrete reason but you can come to some "logical" guesses. I personally believe that she goes back to London to stay sharp like before she came back to japan, and not be so captivated by Karen that she becomes intimated by her. I personally believe this since Hikari ate fuel and said she will continue to act regardless of what happens, and Karen's Final Lines is her admitting she doesn't want to lose to Hikari.
>>279681090>But that doesn't take away from her character just because she shares the same struggles as everyone else.As the central character there's nothing that makes her more unique than any of the other girls. This is where the hang up is. When ever other character has that plus their own unique situations Karen just comes off as pointless and dull. Why do we want to follow her over someone like Junna or Claudine. The problem isn't that it takes away from her character but rather than she doesn't even HAVE a character to take away from.
>>279681090Extreme example: a main character spends 99 episodes being a whiny little bitch but the 100th and final episode fixes all of his problems. People won't flip their opinion on him even though he is perfectly fine by the end because most of their experience with him was negative.
This is the situation for Karen. People who didn't like Karen because of the anime spent 12 weeks watching Karen barely feeling like a complete character and then spent a day watching Karen be a good character. For most of the time Revue Starlight was a part of a person's life, Karen wasn't good.
I expect new viewers of Revue Starlight who binge the anime and then the movie will have a better opinion of Karen then those who watched while it was airing.
>>279681414Yeah it's not that the movie didn't do a good job, but it simply too little too late.
>>279681025Hikari has a really bad habit of ditching Karen (or anyone), and itโs even mentioned in the VN. If you put together all the times she left her:
1. When they were kids
2. After the TV show/the 100th Starlight performance at the Seisho Festival
3. After the movie
She went back to London after the 100th Seisho because it was part of an exchange program.
Then she left again after the movie but that makes sense, since the whole point of the movie is about people chasing their own spotlight. Karen and Hikari were meant to perform together in Starlight, but not in Wildscreen Baroque.
[Pic is VN spoiler]
Even in the movie Hikari comes off more like a main character than Karen did. Karen mostly just sulks her friend left. She questions why she acts but that's the same thing everyone else is doing. Juna is on the verge of quitting entirely. Hikari is the one who comes back trying to make up for her actions.
>>279681516Iโd argue itโs even worse than that. Sheโs kind of like Banana, but worse. Banana got her wake-up call after losing to Hikari and Karen in Starlight, but because of the time loop, you donโt really see any delayed development in the original timeline.
In Karenโs case, she gets her wake-up call after fighting Hikari in the movie. You could argue that it ends there and the Stage Live story or manga isnโt canon, but it still adds something to her character. I remember Karen still feeling lost around the time the other 99th students were taking entrance exams for their dream acting academies. I think she skipped the exam, and the ending shows her finding her own path.
It's genuinely the best anime movie I have ever seen in my entire life. I could watch this over and over and never get tired of it. Music was spot on, visually looked incredible just... FUCK it was sooooooooo good god dammnit. Why can't I have my memory wiped and watch this for the first time again.
>>279681353>As the central character there's nothing that makes her more unique than any of the other girls. This is where the hang up is.Ah yes. Slowly we are getting to the heart of the matter. The narrative shifts from "she is too average, she doesnโt have the qualifications to be where she is" to "but she is just as good as the others, and she should be exceptional". Now Iโm just waiting for one of Karen's haters to outright admit that itโs just because she is not Tendo Maya! or Banana.
>>279681839You're a special kind of illiterate.
It's been a while since I've watched the anime so I could be misremembering, but was Karin ever shown to be on Maya and Kuro's level in the real world before the 2v2 revue? I remember her still being worse in reality which made the win feel like a bullshit "fated" one. I don't actually mind that Maya and Kuro lost because their scene after the defeat was 110% worth it.
>>279682003No. She just gets a sudden MC plot bullshit boost
>>279682003How often does it happen that the protagonist in anime starts from the position of being the best?
>>279682073More than you think.
>>279681767rebellion is better
eoe is better
redline is better
lagann hen is better
disappearance is better
>>279682073You're missing the point. It would have been better if Karen was shown to be improving a lot in the real world. At the point of the 2v2 she should have been a serious contender for a lead role if the revues weren't a thing. The mismatch between her real skill and revue power makes the win come off as MC plot armor which doesn't endear me to Karen.
>>279682003>>279682016>Karin ever shown to be on Maya and Kuro's level in the real world before the 2v2 revueIn Mahiruโs episode (episode 5), we see Karen slowly grow through consistent routines and good habits while working with Hikari. In Bananaโs timeline, Karen was the weakest, even weaker than Junna. But in the current timeline, Hikari acts as a catalyst for both of them because of their promise.
Based on events on the real world, everyone aside from Banana is growing rapidly, and Karen and Hikari are rising to take the lead roles in Starlight (ref. Ep 5).
>her still being worse in reality which made the win feel like a bullshit "fated" oneTo properly judge the MayaKuro Revue in episode 10, you also need to look at the Banana vs Karen Revue in episode 9. Karen explicitly mentions that everyone is growing day by day.
The thing about the Revues is that they arenโt just about raw skill. Banana is the most skilled (shes the reverse Junna who has the most passion but no skill), yet Banana still gets pushed back by Junna in the movie. Itโs about passion. The only reason Banana wins in her timelines is because sheโs genuinely passionate about redoing Starlight.
And when it comes to passion and the drive to steal the spotlight, Karen and Hikari are at their peak during the MayaKuro Revue. Thatโs the best version of them. And itโs not far-fetched at all when you remember Karen actually beat Kuro in episode 8.

>The only reason Banana wins in her timelines is because sheโs genuinely passionate about redoing Starlight.I would say that Nana wasnสผt capable of winning the auditions that many times *because* of her passion. Or rather, that was the case at first, but later it was because she knew what was going to happen and was just following the script, so, when Hikari shows up in our timeline, and Nana grows desperate to keep things the same, she is not fighting with passion anymore, so, despite of how talented she is, she ends failing both against Hikari and Karen, who are in better condition than ever, and keep improving even mid-revue.
