>Shoujo: Guy and girl are both hot
>Shonen: Girl is way hotter
Why is it always like this?

I don't really understand the male obsession with generic self inserts. It wasn't always like this, was it? I can respect Rance fans because Rance actually has a personality.

You notice the girl is hot in Shoujo, but you don't notice she is batshit crazy, demand princess treatment and a leach to society.

Both sides have the protagonist being "ugly". It's just that Shoujo protagonists are ugly on the inside.

The shoujo girl is usually plain, it's just that anime girls are naturally more visually appealing than anime guys.

On the contrary they're actually expressly the opposite of obsessed with the generic self insert. They think about the girl, not the man, so obviously there's less entropic penalty with a male design that doesn't make you think.

It isn't always like this. You just have a very distorted perception due to spending too much time on /a/.

You people actually keep thinking that shit like Nagatoro and other random things are some kind of super popular thing and things like Honey Lemon Soda completely fly under your radar or whatever.

>>279674400
This too is completely bullshit and just something you made up.

Like seriously, what is in general up with so many anime fans existing who have the most distorted and inaccurate view of anime. I always see so many posts that just sound like they never actually consumed the media they're talking about.

A lot of shonen romances focus on making the main guy feel as awkward and embarrassed as possible or make him some sort of pathetic NEET and build the comedy off of that. Plenty of shonen has cute and cool main leads but they barely ever have any romance.

Hachiman is very good looking for the average harem/romcom protagonist.

Yeah, that.
Anon, do you actually think that something like Nagatoro can even scratch the popularity of something like say Death Note or Attack on Titan.

That's what I think is so weird, you people take some super obscure little thing that pretty much no one outside of very specific circles has heard of and think it's actually some massive pop culture icon. It's so weird. You people have absolutely completely lost touch with the simple reality that the overwhelming majority of people who watch anime quite often never heard of Nagatoro. Of course, they all know what Death Note, Attack on Titan, Naruto and so forth is.

It's just so weird how much you people often just completely have no perspective.

>Why is it always like this?
It's not. There are plenty of romance stories for girls where the female lead isn't exceedingly pretty, you're just predisposed to noticing it less because "plain girls" still have a baseline level of anime character attractiveness, and/or often come off as homely cute to guys.

As for why it's comparatively less common for romances aimed at boys to have a handsome male lead, it's because more of them are targeted at a male self-insert fantasy where the protagonist can find love with a hot girl even if he's super ordinary or an outright loser. At the same time, it's not uncommon for romances aimed at girls to target a female power fantasy about being a princess; i.e, the female lead finds love in part because she's cute/beautiful and incredibly desirable to the hot guy(s).

Again, these aren't universally true, both demographics have works swinging from one side to the other; this is all speaking in a very broad and relative sense.

This. There's honestly barely any difference between a plain girl and a pretty girl in anime.

For women, just the fantasy of having a good looking partner isn't enough. They have to be good looking as well in said fantasy. For men, being good looking is not a necessary part of the fantasy, it is usually just a tool used to attract a good looking partner.

Not in OP's pic, if anything she's TOO submissive and quiet, she enters the marriage expecting to be treated like a servant and feels bad for even asking to borrow a sewing kit to fix up her threadbare kimono.

Not really a good example on the shonen side. I feel like 8man is supposed to look creepy and intimidating as opposed to the usual generic, average-looking harem protagonist.
