Berserk has fantastic spreads and has a pretty cool fantasy world. It is the Dark Souls aesthetic before Dark Souls. The story in itself however, is not all that. Itโ€™s ultimately just a practice in misery and bloodshed, edgelords galore with lolis included. Highly and absurdly overrated because of the artwork, definition of style over substance. Not to say itโ€™s bad by any means but fucking certainly not the greatest thing ever made. Itโ€™s in the top 20 of all time at the very least. Peaks at the conviction arc and unironically just becomes rpg shit once he gets the berserker armor

Why would that be a deterrent to start reading it?

Never. It's not like I obsess over it everyday, but when it's done I will read it all again. I keep up with the manga when and if I see it.

Yeah, it's very good and it ends at a point that offers closure on at least a few big plot threads in the story.

That self contained story from the Berserk anime is a watered down version of the Golden Age arc. Not experiencing the full, superior manga version of that story is doing yourself a disservice.

It's great through Tower of Conviction, then gradually gets worse until Miura dies and his buddy picked up the series

When the hiatus started piling up and they went to travel or i don't know.
Anyway, it wasn't the same anymore after Guts partied up with the others. It started feeling like One Piece and Fairy Tail where every party member gets an opponent designed to be defeated by them, and the battle is consists of these 1 on 1s.

When he started playing idolmasters too much. Maybe around the ship arc.
There's no way the edgy Miura who started Berserk was the same Miura who was writing Berserk at that time. Mangaka shouldn't drag a story on for too long, for their own sake's. Finish it in a couple of years and make a sequel later if you really want to continue the story somehow.

I should mention that "for their own sake" I mean for the sake of their writer integrity and the story they had in mind when they started, not "for their profits", because it's definitely more profitable to drag a series on for decades and have merchandise.
But I'm sure everyone knows a story that went on for too long. Monster Musume for one in my case. Oroka na Tenshi Akuma really dropped in quality after 10-15 volumes for me, to the point where I was considering buying it before but not anymore. I also don't know how people read those romcoms where it takes 500 chapters for the first kiss to happen.

this is completely true. people talk about it like its the greatest work of fiction, despite being introductory seinen (which its barely different from your average shounen). it IS great, however.
