It's Miyazaki's only adult-ish leaning animation that isn't his modern completely adult orientated animation that's a total betrayal of himself as an artist and as a result, fucking bad. So I get if that's what you like from anime, Red Pig's going to be your favorite Miyazaki film.
>>279699420 (OP) it's filled with bombastic larger than life characters and has a good balance of somber moments, adventure on the high seas, and comedic interactions. Is it that baffling to you that some people really enjoy that kind of media experience?

>>279699459 This. I agree it's not his best, but it's the one I've rewatched the most. It's just very comfy and satisfying and uplifting to watch. Also while both Nausicaa and Porco Rosso are chock full of references to Homer's Odyssey (Nausicaa rescues Odysseus after his shipwreck), Porco Rosso is the movie that really embraces it and runs with it.

Miyazaki's best is Castle of Cagliostro and Totoro. Ghibli's best is Pom Poko.
>>279699420 (OP) It's tied with Whisper of the Heart for my favorite. >>279699459 >Doesn't have to be the best to be a fan favorite Pretty much this. I'd probably say Laputa is his "best" movie factoring in every aspect. And it's still nearly as good as Porco. I just like Porco a little more.

>>279699420 (OP) The only really weird picks for favorite Ghibli movie would be Earthsea or The Cat Returns. With any of the others it's pretty easy to understand why it might be a favorite.
>>279705225 >undeniable magic and whimsy That can be said about most Ghibli movies though. Of course it's not inconceivable, but The Cat Returns is clearly a lesser production in their catalogue. It has an appeal somewhere between Whisper of the Heart (obviously), Howl's Moving Castle, and maybe Arrietty, but it's just clearly not as strong as any of them. So it would be an odd choice of favorite.

When did you realize Miyazaki was right about literally everything regarding anime and otaku and that industry currently panders to pedos and inbreeders?
>>279705751 Miyazaki is like Kubrick. In that he is a genius but with such a narrow view of what is "good" that it only applies to his own stuff. There are hundreds of good movies and shows he would say is crap because it isn't done the way he would do it. And I veimently disagree with his view on all TV anime being bad because of the format. I think long TV series have a better potential for telling stories. He just doesn't like the lower animation quality. But story and characters is even more important than animation.
for most folks their favorite Ghibli movie is going to be whatever the first one they watched is
for me that first was Mononoke Hime, but as far a favorites go it's tough to choose between Castle in the Sky and Porco Rosso, with Poppy Hill coming in 3rd
>>279705084 earthsea is so fucking bad, it's actually difficult to watch
>>279705861 >What is โgoodโ only applies to his stuff He likes Takahata and Annoโs works too though, even collaborated with the latter a couple of times.
>>279705751 when I found out about that anime about waifu soft drink cans and a second time years later when I found out reincarnated as a vending machine in the dungeon was a real thing and not a goncharov

>>279705886 Anno was Miyazaki's underling. And it's ironic he claims to hate what modern anime has become when Anno is one of the biggest reasons for that. So either he's a hypocrite or his sayings are taken wildly out of context. It's likely the latter.
>>279705880 >for most folks their favorite Ghibli movie is going to be whatever the first one they watched is Not so much the first one but the one the media or their friends hyped up to them. Which tends to be the first one they see. This is why so many people say Spirited Away is their favorite.

>>279706023 >Anno is one of the biggest reasons for that Unintentionally though, Eva was created as a critique on otaku culture and to shit all over them but the retards couldnโt media literacy and ran with it as an otaku symbol instead.
>>279706084 Eva was created as one part homage to Ideon and one part Anno "fixing" Gundam. But he also has blatantly said he put a lot of the fanservice and self inserting stuff in because he liked it. Later after it blew up, he tried to use End of Eva and the Rebuilds to try and become a critique on the fanservice and consumerism it created. But it doesn't change that the first version of Eva was embracing it.

>>279706087 Not at all true. The problem with modern anime is people like you only focus on the 1% of popular ones. Then complain they are too mainstream. And then a few others which are paid for by western interests.
There's thousands of others that are obscure, sexual or like anime of the old days. You just don't go looking for them. You just look at the top 5 /a/ or giggik talks about then bitch about them.

>>279706315 >>279703654 Miyazaki didn't have a big hand in Nadia. He just did some early concept work. Junichi Sato had a bigger influence on Eva than Miyazaki had on Nadia. And few people even know Junichi Sato worked on Eva.
>>279706023 Miyazaki can recognize Anno's talent despite Anno is everything he hates. Actually that speak well of Miyazaki. He can disagree with Anno but still respect him
>>279706315 That was Anno ranting about not being able to control women. He wanted to fuck Noriko Hidaka but she didn't reciprocate even after he gave her two iconic roles and stalked her. People say lolicons feel attracted to little girls because they don't feel confidence on themselves and believe a little girl is easier than a woman. Reminder that Anno introduced an age gap relationship on Gunbuster too.
Isn't curious that Anno's wife draw herself as a baby? Maybe there's something kinky on their relationship
