I actually read the strip and and Ryuuzi was far less of an obvious virginbait self-insert there. Looked better, actually had “hunter eyes” instead of that dull expression, better haircut, prettier hands, more personality, they actually had interesting interactions there. I wonder if the book was more like that too and they just changed this in the television series to make it more marketable to colossal losers who can't see themselves into someone with an actual personality any more.

Very mediocre romcom. You generally have to be in your teens or pretty new to anime to think it's the greatest thing ever. That was true for most of the fans back then. That's why it's so common to see posts saying it doesn't hold up after watching it again years later or they're afraid they won't like it anymore after a rewatch.

The ending in particular was just bizarre and it would've worked far better as a broes-before-hoes ending as in:

It's garbage written by someone blindly trying to ape character traits from other series without knowing what made them work or ever interacting with another human being.

Taiga is obviously meant to be yet another ripoff of Shana and Louise, but her lack of a context like being from another world or a noble just makes her behavior come off as her being a sped with bouts of tard rage rather than a tsundere, especially when one considers her random clingy obsession with some people and instant juvenile seething hatred towards others and her constant awkward tongue-tied sputtering.

Ryuuji is alright at first and seems to be a voice of reason, but as the series goes on, he turns out to be dense and optimistic to a fault to the point of ignoring obvious red flags in the behavior of others and letting the people he supposedly holds dear suffer on their own when he could easily have fixed things by paying attention and offering support. Worse yet, he even doubles down and turns into a screaming asshole when others try to wake him up from his happy-go-lucky ignorance.

Minori's character is seemingly full of potential, only to get utterly squandered. She's an incredibly entertaining and pleasant genki girl at first, but then the forced drama section of the show starts, and she starts becoming incredibly obsessed with standing up for Taiga, depriving herself of things for her sake and generally having severe self-esteem and guilt issues. This would have made for a great set-up for a sad past where Minori had caused Taiga to suffer (and no, daddy being busy with work does not count as suffering) and was obsessed with atoning for it, with them helping her accept that she doesn't need to suffer anymore, but instead, there's no real reason for it other than vague yuribaiting, and Minori just conveniently wallows in pretentious self-loathing for the sake of letting Taiga have Ryuuji because muh tsundere end.

Ami's 3DPD in 2D, and Kitamura's a non-character.

Ami's constantly trying to come off as being wise and mature as she gives advice to the others, but it really falls flat because her behavior is generally that of the most shallow floozie you can possibly imagine, and it's a pointless waste of time since the characters never really listen to her anyways and are set in their idiotic ways.

Kitamura's an incoherent character only there for the sake of the initial premise, and he never really feels like he's one of the main characters. Apparently he fell for Taiga at first sight, then he suddenly ignored her when she fell for him, then he developed a crush on some frigid student council bitch, then he threw a tantrum, dyed his hair and ran away from home because he couldn't fathom a long-distance relationship, culminating in him choosing the worst possible place to confess at where she obviously wouldn't just approve of it and say yes. Oh, and he flip-flops between straight-laced student council guy and lolrandum because the author clearly didn't know what else to do with him. Very believable character writing.

It's a genuinely poorly written series, and the cult surrounding it solely because "muh tsunderie" has negative IQ.

Taiga is a product of the era.
But it's still become one of those shows you have to watch since everyone else has seen it.

The way the series tries its hardest to make Taiga seem like the victim in the school festival arc when she's the one hijacking the festival to make it all about herself and her father is extremely forced. In general, the show has a really bad case of heavy-handedly telling the viewer that Taiga is totally an angel and that her happiness is all that matters, while what it actually shows is her being a self-centered parasitic cunt (Minori's mental health is clearly spiraling downwards, and Ryuuji's finally getting an opportunity to check up on her? No! I want my Santa! Oh good, he stopped everything he was doing to be my Santa, at the risk of ghosting Minori after making a promise with her. I did the same. I dropped it after episode 19 and read her ending instead, and it's genuinely superior as an ending from a storytelling standpoint. Teenage drama is pretty realistic to ignite over the silliest of things, so it’s silly to denigrate the series over. Especially given the nature of the characters, which is a key issue in toradora. Taiga is plainly awful to most people and to the person she supposedly likes, but everyone around her treats her with kiddy gloves nor do they check her when she acts up. Kitamura is basically just there to serve as an initial hump for her to progress her own relationship with her “true love” Ryuuji. He is a non character in the grand scheme. Taiga is realistic, a brat and a little pest with no redeeming traits other than to be a helpless mutt that satisfies Ryuuji caregiver fetish. She would be the worst girl if not for that other idiot Minori. Cause boy o’ boy, she is a wet hot mess of a person. Minori is frankly a pain, a cheery genki on the outside but has layers. Those layers, you may wonder? Right, she’s a guilt ridden shit with an obsession over Taiga and an infatuating romantic desire for Ryuuji long before her friend likes him. What she does about it? Nothing, just pretends to be a tard (she isn’t pretending) and negs MC at times because he can’t read his temperamental friend Taiga properly and doesn’t immediately understand and cater to her will. Even though he feeds and acts like a surrogate dad, or more like an owner of an ungrateful mutt. It’s not enough, Minori demands MC courts her friend, the man she loved for all this time and has only revealed such feelings through stupid riddles. A girl who passes off her friend’s problems and baggage to MC and whines about it. A girl that bellyaches over the most pathetic sense of guilt seem in a love interest. A coward through to the end, a truly awful girl that rightfully gets nothing for all her toil. Minori is shit.
