were domain expansions kind of a mistake?

they were cool to look at, but conceptually, it's hard to put that in a fight without it just being an "insta-win" button. the idea of a domain clash where the strongest domain wins is also pretty dumb since it boils down to "this character wins because he's stronger and that's it" and robs us of a proper fight

They were okay, the problem was the 100% hit rate auto attacks being a default feature of them. Because of that the only two options to deal with a domain is either being tough enough to tank it or put out a better domain and nullify it. The latter is just boring since it erases the domain from the fight, and the former was something very few characters in the cast were able to do. Partly because few characters are tanky/able to spam RCT, and partly because most domain auto hit effects were broken and bypassed durability/regeneration entirely. (Infinite Void, Self Embodiment of Perfection, and Moon Palace for a few examples.) Due to this any actual fighting in a domain couldn't last long unless you met the specific requirements of a domain that isn't broken + characters who can deal with autohits. (Like Toji vs. Dagon)

I was going to say Malevolent Shrine since it is the same technique as Sukuna's but Yuji does use a different hand sign on top of the whole "expanding your inner domain" thing so I guess it would be different.

Yuji's handsign is apparently for kshitigarbha (sanskrit) /Jizo (japanese).
This also translates to "earth storehouse" or "earth womb." This was the name of a monk that took a vow to not achieve Buddhahood until all beings in all the hells were redeemed.
So, something stemming from that. Like "Earth Mother" which I think I like because it reminds me of the band Wolfmother.

Gojo is more popular than your favorite character and JJK is the biggest hit of the decade. You better hope when season 3 comes the hype doesn't come back like it did before. If gege would've made JJK a long running series, it would've changed the landscape more than it did already.
