I think the subtext is:

Frieren's old party could have beaten Aura, but the moralfags in the party didn't want to murder a bunch of meatshields who were unwillingly doing Aura's bidding. So they avoided fighting Aura and Frieren worked on a way to dispell Aura's obediance magic instead.
Then 80 years later, all of the people who were mindcontrolled during the war with the demon king are dead and Aura has accumulated more mindcontrolled flesh slaves but now she cuts off their heads so Frieren's novel magic to counter Aura without ending any human lives does nothing but keep the topped off corpses of her victims presentable.
All of this mirrors the succes she had by putting off her fight with Qual whom she treats with respect almost.
