the story lost its soul after L died. should have had him beat Light from beyond the grave with some sort of clever dead man's switch instead of introducing his uninteresting child replacements.

The ending was perfectly fine - in the manga at least. The anime glosses over a lot and makes it more asspully than it actually was. It's just an inferior adaptation overall
