Alright, it is Saturday and I am gonna post the thirteenth volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.

Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is ๅขƒ็•ŒใฎRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.

Previous thread: >>279785059

I will be using scans of the official VIZ localization. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.

Original title was "ใŠ้‡‘่ฒธใ—ใฆ" which is essentially "Lend memoney" though Japanese does the word order differently.

Cover was originally in full color.

October 26th, 2011. Author's note:
"Q: There is clay in front of you, what will you make?
A: A doll."

Sakura's said "้“็ซฏใงๅœŸไธ‹ๅบงใชใ‚“ใ‹ใ—ใฆ..." in the original Japanese for "kneeling on the ground on the side of the road...". So, she did refer to it as a dogeza (ๅœŸไธ‹ๅบง), the most deferent act of Japanese etiquette. Though she did say "ๅœŸไธ‹ๅบงใชใ‚“ใ‹" which is closer to "something like a dogeza" or "dogeza or something".

End of chapter. The envelope says ่ฟ”ๅด or "return". I love their expressions in that panel. But of course, Sabato is who he is. Also, I have a note from Furinkan:

"The baby picture of Rinne that Sabato is after has a curtain in the background with the kanji "่ณช" written on it. This "shichi" or "pawn" as in "pawn shop"."

Oh and another one I missed regarding this:
>>279866037
""Nagesen!" - Ageha is literally saying "coin toss!" (ๆŠ•ใ’้Šญ) when she tosses her coin at her sister's mask. Typically this is referring to tossing a coin to a beggar or into a donation box at a temple. Ageha is initially shown throwing coins as a weapon. This is meant to reference her indifference to her own wealth, however there is a historical context to this as well. Famous fictional detective Heiji Zenigata (้Šญๅฝขๅนณๆฌก) was known for throwing coins with holes in the center (kanetsuho/ๅฏ›ๆฐธ้€šๅฎ). Inspector Zenigata from the manga and anime Lupin III is based on Heiji Zenigata."

I've explained that before, but I didn't have the reference to Heiji Zenigata (assuming it is a reference).

Hm, for some reason, Furinkan has the wrong title listed for this chapter. The original title is "้ŽŒใฎไบ‹ใชใ‚‰ไธ‰ๆ—ฅๆœˆๆŽŒ" and it translates to what you see here.

Furinkan notes that: "[The rabbit] welcomes Rinne and Rokumon by saying "ใŠใŠใใซ" (Ookini). This is "welcome/thank you" in the Kansai-ben dialect which is commonly spoken in Osaka. Often people that speak with this dialect are stereotyped as brash and boisterous. Sometimes they are also seen as jokesters given the connection of Kansai-ben with manzai comedians. Further they are also sometimes seen as shrewd business people."

Oh, but I double checked and it seems she only said that in the anime. She just says "ใŠใ“ใ—ใ‚„ใ™ใƒผใ€‚" or "welcome" here.

We got names. So, now I'll post Furinkan's notes. Furinkan chooses not to romanize their names specifically as Left and Right, so they call them Refuto and Raito instead. Unlike VIZ.

"The joke is the lunar reference in the store's name and the fact that Refuto and Raito are rabbits. In Japan there is the story of the rabbit on the moon rather than the "man in the moon" that is talked about in the West."

"Twins in Japan - there is a difference in "older" with twins in Japanese culture. The twin that is physically born first would be the eldest in the West. In Japan however, the first born is the "youngest" because the "elder" twin offered to let them leave the womb first which indicates their maturity and care. It is difficult to say if Raito is saying she was physically born first (and would be older by Western reckoning) or if she is older because she allowed Refuto to be physically born first and would be the elder sister by traditional Japanese twin standards."

I didn't know that about twins in Japan.

Could you check which word they use for "fourth heir" here? I'm guessing it might be "4ไปฃ็›ฎ", and I've been struggling with translating that particular term in a kabuki related context. Translating it as "heir" is an attractive idea, but properly speaking it refers to a generation, and a fourth generation would technically not be the same as a fourth heir, since the first generation presumably didn't inherit the position from anyone.

Original title is "ๆˆ‘ใŒๅŠ็”Ÿ" which is what we see VIZ went with. Furinkan went with "Half of my Life" because ๅŠ is half and ็”Ÿ is life. Presumably, there's a reason why VIZ left it untranslated like it is a distinct thing in this context.

It was apparently "ๅ››ไปฃ็›ฎไธ‰ๆ—ฅๆœˆๆ–Ž" in the narration box with "ใฟใ‹ใฅใใ•ใ„" in the Furigana. ๅ››ไปฃ็›ฎ does mean "fourth generation" as you said. Furinkan says the following:

""This is the fourth master, Mikazukisai." Here Raito introduces Refuto by saying he is "Mikazukisai" (ไธ‰ๆ—ฅๆœˆๆ–Ž). This is likely meant to be the professional name he inherited."

But I don't know about that? "ไธ‰ๆ—ฅๆœˆ" does mean crescent moon, so it does refer to their place of business. Not sure what ๆ–Ž means in this context. But anyway, you were right. I guess he should be the third heir technically. By the way, Rinne's line is reacting specifically to "ๅ››ไปฃ็›ฎ".

Left's line here was "ใƒœใ‚ฑใ‚ซใ‚นใ€‚" which Google Translated as "Idiot". Furinkan says that: ""Stupid leftovers/dregs" would be an ultra-literal translation of "bokekasu"."

I assume VIZ went with "balderdash" simply because there's really no context surrounding it in this recap here. And yes, they used the same term (ๅ››ไปฃ็›ฎไธ‰ๆ—ฅๆœˆๆ–Ž) for "fourth heir of the crescent moon" here as well.

These are made from rice flour, rice and water and are traditionally eaten during the Moon Viewing Festival in September. The joke here is connected with the above rabbit/moon aspects of Japanese culture."

Look at their cute little cups. The rabbit you can vaguely see in the spots on the moon looks like it is making mochi.

Furinkan has a note: "Reform fraud (ใƒชใƒ•ใ‚ฉใƒผใƒ ่ฉๆฌบ) is a real thing. Basically it involves convincing a customer that work is needed when none actually is. For example a construction company suggesting moisture is trapped beneath wooden flooring and suggesting it is ripe for termites when in fact there is no problem with a floor."

Honestly, I don't know how I would've translated Hansei with this context. I guess it is a memoir so "half of my lifetime" would've been okay?

Well, there we go. And yes, it was written "hansei" in English letters in the Japanese original as well. Furinkan notes that:

"The name of the third Mikazukisai's book is "ๆˆ‘ใŒๅ็œ/Wa ga Hansei", "My Life" or "My Recollections". However, because "Hansei" is written in English, Refuto does not realize it is a homophone and actually means "Hansei" as in "ๅ็œ" (failures)."

The chapter title had it as "ๆˆ‘ใŒๅŠ็”Ÿ" with the ใฏใ‚“ใ›ใ„ as the furigana for Hansei. I guess VIZ did the right thing by just leaving it untranslated.

Original title was "Mใฎๆ‚ฒๅЇ" and Furinkan has a note regarding it: "The title ... "M's Tragedy" (Mใฎๆ‚ฒๅЇ), is based on a 1982 Japanese novel "W's Tragedy" (Wใฎๆ‚ฒๅЇ). This was in turn adapted into a film of the same name directed by Shinichiro Sawai (who directed the live-action Maison Ikkoku Apartment Fantasy film). Takahashi would also use the title for her 1991 short story The Tragedy of P (๏ผฐใฎๆ‚ฒๅЇ)."

November 30th, 2011. Author's note:

Forgot to mention that the bank says "anoyo bank", as in "afterlife bank". Anoyo (ใ‚ใฎไธ–) means "other world" and refers to the afterlife in this series and in general.

Kain's final line here had a note in Japanese: "ๅ‘ฝๆ•ฐ็ฎก็†ๅฑ€ใฎMใฎใƒžใƒผใ‚ฏ! (ใƒญใƒผใƒžๅญ—่ชญใฟ)" so, it said "read in romanized characters". I assume the M in that case refers to "ๅ‘ฝๆ•ฐ" or "Meisu" as in "lifespan". I assume in VIZ's localzation, the M is for Management.

Furinkan has a note here:
"The "M" on the duralumin case is said to have different meanings depending on who the case belonged to. Kain says it stands for "Meisuu" (ๅ‘ฝๆ•ฐ/lifespan). Rinne says the "M" stands for "Masato", but Masato, because he cannot spell says it stands for "akuMa" (ๆ‚ช้ญ”/demon)."

The "Shinigami Medium Seals" were referred to as "ไพไปฃใ‚ทใƒผใƒซ" or "yorishiro seals". Furinkan reminds us that: "Yorishiro (ไพไปฃ) is a Shinto term for an object that has a spirit drawn to it." We previously saw the term "yorishiro" show up in the context of a balloon and a doll, but VIZ translated it as "channeling doll" and "channeling balloon". I don't know why the changed it up this time. I guess because these don't really channel in the same way? Still, I prefer to be consistent.

The toad sticker says "ใƒ’ใ‚ญใ‚ฌใ‚จใƒซ" or "toad".

Masato's attack last page was "ๅœฐ็„ใฎๆฅญ็ซ" so, "Hell Fire" but using the Japanese terms.

It is usually frowned upon to bring tupperware to a buffet. The Japanese term here was "ใ‚ฟใƒƒใƒ‘ใƒผ" which is "tappaa" so clearly a loanword from the brand name.

Also, googling a bit, it seems Japanese people don't do "to-go" boxes for leftovers in general at restaurants.

And yes, the sign said "Sweet & cake" with English letters in the Japanese original as well.

Original title was "ใ‚ฏใƒชใ‚นใƒžใ‚นใฎๆกไปถ" or "Christmas Requirements" as Furinkan translated it. It seems ๆกไปถ means terms or conditions. And yes, ใ‚ฏใƒชใ‚นใƒžใ‚น is Christmas or Kurisumasu.

I love this chapter and I love this cover. Also, Furinkan notes that: "Double-numbered issues indicate that a new issue will not be published the following week. This is done to give the artists a holiday break." So yeah, this was the last chapter of 2011.

Furinkan notes that: "In Japan Christmas (particularly Christmas Eve) is seen as a romantic holiday when a couple might spend time together and exchange gifts. The decorations and festive atmosphere of Christmas in the west is present, minus the religious aspects. This is why Ageha is keen to be with Rinne for Christmas and have a date with him."

Oh and the original Japanese had Miho refer to a recession (rather than just hard times) so Furinkan has a note about Japan's various ones:

""Oh yeah, I've heard that they had to sell the house because of the recession." - Beginning in 1991 the the Japanese "bubble economy" burst resulting in what was initially called the "Lost Decade" (1991-2001). When the economy failed to improve by 2011 the term "The Lost 20 Years" was introduced. Another ten years passed and the term became "The Lost 30 Years," or more generally "The Lost Decades" (ๅคฑใ‚ใ‚ŒใŸๅๅนด). The 2008 Great Recession, the Tohoku Earthquake of 2011 and the global COVID-19 pandemic and resulting recession have all prolonged Japan's economic woes."

Furinkan notes that:

""So they asked me to leave some chicken for it as an offering." - Chicken (particularly Kentucky Fried Chicken) is considered a traditional Christmas meal in Japan. In the 1970s KFC began their "Kentucky for Christmas" promotion in Japan to try and create a Christmas tradition. The promotion was a huge success and Japanese households soon adopted the concept of getting a "party barrel" (what we call a "bucket" of chicken in the west) to eat with their family on Christmas Eve. The 1981 documentary Colonel Comes to Japan discusses how KFC entered the Japanese market and found success."

Of course, we already have that note from VIZ. That documentary is on youtube, if you're interested.

Oh, Furinkan has a note for Tsubasa's line. It seems the localizer's went for a pragmatic translation rather than explain all the context. Furinkan has us though:

""It's just like the Hyakumonogatari parlor game." - Tsubasa is referring to "Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai" (็™พ็‰ฉ่ชžๆ€ช่ซ‡ไผš) which translates as "A Gathering of One Hundred Supernatural Tales". The parlor games was popularized during the Edo period and involved three rooms of a home. In one room a table with a mirror placed upon it was filled with 100 lit candles. Neighbors and friends were invited into the home and told ghost stories called "kaidan" (ๆ€ช่ซ‡). With the conclusion of each tale the host would pass from the dark first room, through the dark second room and into the candle-filled third room. There, they would extinguish a candle and stare into the mirror to see if a ghost appeared. Allegedly, once 100 tales were told and the final candle was snuffed something mysterious would happen."

Feel free to use the thread to discuss anything Rin-ne related. I have some stuff I'll posting here and there to bump the thread.

I will be returning next Wednesday to dump Volume 14 of Rin-ne. In addition, I will be dumping the Rumic one-shot "A Guilty Happening" in that thread.

during the test some were basically big cats standing on their hind legs, some had human-esque bodies, and others were like kurosu and suzu with human bodies with cat ears + tail (oboro still has cat feet, while kurosu and suzu wear shoes)

looking this up further, besides meaning "monitor", it can also refer to a "person who gives feedback on products"
i'm assuming this usage entered their vocab by a slight misunderstanding/reinterpretation of someone who monitors something? i see the similarities but i feel like there's a difference between a monitor and a tester (that i can't quite put into words right now)

I actually have some bad news about that. The source for my fan translations for Rumic Theater has dried up. They haven't done more than two chapters from that series as far as I can tell right now.

I have no idea what to do. There is no official translation for these yet.

I've begun looking into it, and from what I'm getting off furinkan after A Guilty Happening would be
>My Sky
I found that the big comic original twitter actually dumped the whole thing last year (no color pages unfortunately)
I'll keep searching to see if I can find translations, maybe the spics have it (I can read spanish)
after that would be
>Revenge Doll
which was part of the Came the Mirror that VIZ published
also the site I've been getting the rin-ne color pages from seems to have some other one-shots and even some of rumiko's short personal stories, but I'll check the dates and all that in a bit

>Tonegawa is written ๅˆฉๆ นๅท
which is also the name of an irl river
ๅˆฉๆ น when said as rikon can mean "intelligence", "cleverness"

>Based On A True Story!

the tv show uses okotsu

Date is ไผŠ้” which is a word meaning "sophistication", "chivalrous", "affectation" and so on
his "Risa dear" is a translation of ใ‚Šใฃใกใ‚ƒใ‚“ Ritchan

here's something I learned: I noticed the kanji for "tea" and "drink" in the original, but both viz and the fan translation say good friends
apparently ่Œถ้ฃฒใฟๅ‹้” "tea-drinking friend" is a way of expressing you were buddies

the titles of the books on Takanezawa's shelf are very similar to the translation

yeah they were having fun lol the name of the brand is cut-off (...ited) in the raws but the word "people" is on the top of the can

See, the problem is, usually when you have ไปฃ็›ฎ in kabuki, it's the nth holder of a particular stage name. E.g. ๅไธ‰ไปฃ็›ฎๅธ‚ๅทๅœ˜ๅ้ƒŽ is Ichikawa Danjuro XIII. In real kabuki, actors can progress trough multiple stage names over their career, which also involves belonging to small "guilds" associated with specific names, families or acting styles. While family lineage is important, the stage names and guild names often don't correspond at all to each other or to the families of the actors โ€” for instance, the aforementioned Ichikawa Danjuro XIII's birth name is Horikoshi Takatoshi, and his current guild name is Narita-ya.
In the series I'm working on, though, this is all simplified so that an acting family's surname is also their guild name, a single family constitutes a single guild, and stage names are pretty much completely ignored. This causes problems when they refer to someone as ไปฃ็›ฎ, because what it basically means is that that person is the nth generation of the family who was, is or will go on to become the master of the guild. When the main character is referred to as 17ไปฃ็›ฎ, I can't translate it as Kunisaki Izumo XVII, because his full name is his real name: His father is the 16ไปฃ็›ฎ despite having a different personal name. I could drop the first name and go with Kunisaki XVII, but I'm sort of iffy on that since there are a whole bunch of other characters with the same surname. "17th heir" as I already noted would just be inaccurate.
"The 17th Generation" or "(Future) 17th Head (of the guild)" are the best translations in my opinion, but they can be pretty clunky depending on context, and also requires fitting several words in the space of three kanji... And this isn't even going into all the deliberation I've had about using the word "guild" as a translation for "ๅฑ‹".

What a nightmare. Yeah, they should've realized. But I don't mind what they did besides the ultimately minor inaccuracy. You could maybe argue that the founder is the first heir if you go for a flowery idea of inheriting it from destiny or something...

Could "The 17th" /"The 17th Kunisaki" work? It would treat the stage name as more of a title I think

>The 17th
Yeah, I'm leaning towards that option, at least in some contexts. It just all gets a little complex when you throw in terms like ๅพกๆ›นๅญ or ๆขจๅœ’ into the mix, so it takes some amount of consideration to pick the best translation in each case.

Sure, but I just feel it's a bit silly to call him that when there are four other apprentices in the guild with the surname Kunisaki. I assume that they came in from outside the family, so in their case it would actually be a stage name.
