Only parts.
Ice Kaguya (the movie) was good despite the schizo contrarians for example.
But yeah, there's also a lot boring slog, and moslty, Aka clearly didn't care about delivering anymore since he had started OnK.
So many plot points teased since the erliest chapters were brushed off, ignored, or resolved hastily.

It's more that it slowly gets worse and worse after that, with no definite moment at which you can say "wow this manga is shit, I'm dropping this fucking garbage". People just say to drop it at the confession merely because it's a satisfying cut-off point even when for example iceguya is still fun.

The stuff with Hayasaka herself was pretty good, and the general Kyoto SoL stuff was great, but ANYTHING involving Kaguya's brothers is universally shit.

Only positive about Kaguya's brother is that he's the best of the 3 brothers. The Climax arc is so fucking bad with all 3 of them.

The problem with Ishigami-Tsubame is that Aka spent way too many chapters on then but the ending was, quite frankly, pointless. If he wanted to have Ishigami suffer he honestly didn't need to spend so much narrative energy on them and destroy the structure of the plot so much. It seems like Aka wanted her to win but changed his mind halfway due to divorce and chickened out. Like as much shit we give Game of Thrones' ending, imagine one where Daenerys fucking dies coming from Mireen because a sudden storm sinks all her ships. Ishibame gives me that kind of feeling.

Alternatively perhaps Aka wanted to write guya for 400 chapters and would have had Ishigami hook up with Tsubame and Abe (the cat owner who was never important) hook up with Iino, but alas that didn't happen either.

Probably this. I wouldn't say he chickened out, it's more like he got so disillusioned that he went for a negative ending, but still wanted to include stuff he wrote with Tsubame "winning" in mind.

Yes, everything after the ice kaguya arc was awful. The only good thing was the sex chapter but even that was disappointed. The is an arc where Aka goes full white knight and they threaten Kaguya'd older brother with canceling him on Twitter. I'm not kidding, that's how they solve the final conflict.

For a series I followed for literal years, Iโ€™m amazed how effectively I deleted Kaguya from my memory after dropping it during the final arc. I was never even curious to check out season 3, despite enjoying that part of the manga. Regardless, I think the studio adapting the back half of the series in a piecemeal way is the right call, given how much of the content is mediocre to bad.

>Ai practically became the queen of idols despite only being in the prologue
>the manga was also a massive financial success, outselling stuff like Love Hina, and on track to outsell Kaguya
>then the ending happened, and a year later, there wasn't even a squeak about the third season
When people say "this downfall needs to be studied", this is what they're talking about. This is such a spectacular flub, it needs to be in the textbooks. Akasaka flushed his magmun opus down the shitter out of boredom.

the ending wasn't terrible but the big emotional moment of the whole school doing that big goodbye to Shirogane felt "unearned" in a meta sense if that's the right word for it

I don't think Aka wrote ONK's ending out of spite. I think he wanted to be poetic, and rhyme Aqua's fate with Ai's fate. Ai's death was a huge shock, and kicked the story off. Aqua's death was a huge shock, and ended the story. He clearly came up with that ending in the beginning, when he decided to kill Ai off. A mystery is crafted backwards, after all. He wanted Oshi no Ko to be a story of two children, the light side who wants to continue Ai's legacy, and the dark side who wants to avenge her and self-destructs in the end. The problem is, as the story became more and more popular, it grew in size, and suddenly, the characters outpaced what he intended for them. The good kid was now falling into darkness, and the bad kid was the hero, this had to happen to keep shit interesting. We even ended up dabbling in incest for a bit, that's how lost Aka was in his Jenga tower of character development. But he didn't want to change the ending; he still wanted that rhyme, and that was his fatal error. He hoped to shock the audience in a good way, but didn't see the bigger picture. I wonder if he would be willing to add some material to the anime adaptation, which is supposedly coming in 2026, to fix shit up a bit.

Personally I reckon you can fix the ending with some minor tweaks so that it actually makes sense for Aqua to go with that plan. At worst they can copy the live action ending, or use a variation of that one fan ending floating around.
