having takauji be the protagonist and a complex human being was a subversion of that done by the eiji yoshikawa novel and the taiga based on it
and of course pre meiji, takauji and the northern court were cool and the historical winners but in the modern era the taiga was the one rediscovering the ashikaga perspective and this manga is going back to meiji era, just making tokiyuki also the hero when no one on either side usually cared about tokiyuki for obvious reasons

I loved how the anime made Takauji's scenes even better (in my opinion, at least) and more sinister. Genuinely want to know how creepy they'll make the future stuff that isn't adapted yet.

I like this Takauji too but it's this. And the way he is portrayed since he acts pretty retarded/insane. Nobunaga might be depicted as evil sometimes but I have yet to see him being outright demented like Takauji here. Can imagine that a lot that are fine with villains would consider this specific portrayal to be dishonorable. I like different perspectives though. Like the stories that interpret Jeanne D'Arc as schizo or fanatic.

Between last weeks' author comment and him saying he created sakasakyo with the final confrontation with Fubuki in mind, I think he had both the beginning and end of the manga planned out more thoroughly in advance. And I suspect that whatever he did have planned for the middle got messed up somewhat by having to dodge the axe, which would no longer be a concern.
Although, I mostly disagree with the idea that it ever got bad. The Akiie arc was the weakest part to me, and I still thought it was decent. And it introduced best boy.
