Re-read the manga, not at all if anything you'll think either Rin, Isagi or even Sae are the author's pets. He basically had no relevance after the 2nd selection no idea if he's butthurt over EPNG being axed or what. Nagi should've returned as a rival way later.

I don't think people would be so mad if Kaneshiro hadn't sacrificed the end of NEL, spend so much time on his send off, being immediately revived and had actually depicted the survivors.
