The plot as it is now leans on game mechanics-most of the story doesn't need to be that complicated because its basically like, you need to complete the puzzles and random tasks, Things don't need to propulsive and tightly lead neatly into one another, and you can have tonnes of dialogue and character interaction that strictly speaking might not need to be there, but is enjoyable and serves to elaborate on the characters and their relationships to each other. You can just have them talk and talk anytime they need to interact to accomplish any task, and it works, but in a tv show they can't just keep talking without really going anywhere as they complete Tasks A B and C before the next significant plotpoint comes.
Additionally, the format of the game creates a real sense of focus on what the characters are focused on. It reinforces the extremely isolated and intense relationship between the twins because most of the world is as distant and incidental for the audience as it is for them. They don't really care about other people, so a lot of other people don't even have sprites. The wider world they inhabit seems very low resolution, abstract and representational until the siblings decide to play close attention to it. Only each other and a few other characters feel truly important and real. This goes away in a tv show where we constantly see them surrounded and immersed in their actual 3Dworld, without this gamey distancing to reflect their seperation from it and focus on each other and few key elements.
