We mostly see him during his "hero" moments, but it seems he was a normal guy that really wanted to be a true hero, so he often roleplayed one.

Also Frieren misses Himmel and loved him, so of course all her memories we see of him would be positive. You should be able to understand this if you have a functional mind. I don't even fully blame you since most modern media is allergic to the idea of a morally white hero and nobody reads books anymore. In all likelihood you were never exposed to heroes growing up, only walking deconstructions and commentaries on why being a hero is actually [negative buzzword of the day].

The reason she helps Denken out next season is because him talking about all the precious times he spent with his wife before she died directly reminded her of the times she spent with Himmel
