Obviously it has more of an impact on Asuka, I'm pretty sure we see it referenced again in a later episode or maybe EOE.

Maybe I shouldn't have said infatuated, more like deeply interested in receiving effortless validation. He literally begs her to validate him right before the third impact. anno isnt as smart as fans give him credit for. Shinji busting a fat load on asuka is to inform the viewer that shinji is still a fucked up guy, and that the TV series ending doesnt mean shit for the movie. If you watched the TV ending, then EoE you might have assumed that he had some type of growth. He didnt.

My interpretation when i saw it, and i don't give a fuck if it's different from what Anno intended, is that Shinji was emotionally traumatized and near a breakdown, after months of all the adults loading their responsibility on him, manipulating him with guilt into being a child soldier, all the while with complete and utter indifference from his father. Then a lot of people he knew and was close to ended up either dying or wounded in various incidents, first Kaji, then Toji, then Rei, then Asuka, in the end Kaworu.

If Anno's intention was to be symbolism to the reader on how pathetic they are for their cowardness, through Shinji, i don't think it works very well given the circumstances. It's true that Shinji is a sensitive and delicate guy, but then again he's only 14, and the circumstances were heavily set against him.
