I have found the relationship to be inversely proportional.
When the reality is that the more the marriage rate drops, the stronger the desire for love stories becomes.
The content of mainstream Japanese animation in the 80's and 90's was still about heroism. and boys becoming heroes and defeating villains to save the world.
And as we entered the 2000s, the plummeting marriage rate caused the demand for love stories to start skyrocketing.
The vast majority of stories centered on getting the cute girl.
It doesn't matter if the story topic is fantasy, sci-fi, superheroes, school life or comedy. The cute girl is the centerpiece of almost all of them.
As long as the girl is cute enough, the story itself, no matter how trashy, will get an audience.
