We all know that "doujin spirit" is pretty integral to Japanese culture. There are entire country-wide events based off of the idea of creative expression and freedom to share both parodic and original works. Those ideas are so integral to Japanese culture that many industry artists and mangaka participated in said doujin events before or even during their professional occupation.
I want to use this thread to bring attention to some of the fun and cool (and sometimes sexy) doujinshi that many of our favorite mangaka created; because I think exploring this is super interesting! It's fun seeing what these people were into and how their art evolved.
Starting with this Evangelion doujin by a guy named Azuma Kiyohiko.

Forgive me, I don't really know how to do this besides lamely dumping exhentai links because unfortunately I don't have the connections or knowledge or locational advantage to find doujinshi otherwise.
If anyone finds this topic as interesting as I do then I'll call this thread a success.
If anyone has more to share then this I'll call this thread a victory.

Well, I'm fine with getting excited about these all on my own. I think it's cool how these famous mangaka were so willing to share what they made before becoming famous.
Mine Yoshizaki made Keroro Gunsou which is an absurdly long-running manga series. It started in 1999 and it's still ongoing. He really liked old video games like Vampire.

There are H mangaka I sorely wish would make something mainstream but it's a faustian bargain.
I just wish Kotoba Ai would return
>>280026616It's indeed a shame that they usually abandon doujin works. I cope by being happy their lewd stuff was made at all.
I don't know if this is confirmation bias or what but lots of H loli artists are making serialized manga now. Leafy, Neko Danshaku, Mizuno Uchi (pic related: https://exhentai.org/s/8c98eb2b5c/3178185-134), and Henreader all come to mind.

Thank you for your work. It's quite an interesting read to see from where some artists came.
Maybe wasted 10 years doing Tales of the Wedding Ring, which despite the premise took its sweet time and was full of un-necessary awkward moments and the art was worse than his doujins.

What I failed to mention in the OP, and why I think exploring this is so important, is that doujin spirit is also about inspiration.

>When I saw the book handed to me by Oki Yukao, whom I met for the first time, all the blood in my body rushed to my head in an instant. It was just a few pages of folded copy paper stapled together. However, the contents were shocking at the time, with the girl he had drawn so cute, completely naked except for her socks, with her slit clearly drawn. I was dizzy. Oki Yukao was a great pioneer in turning anime-like beautiful girls into erotic objects. I felt like my whole worldview was turned upside down. [...] In any case, if the manga gallery had not existed, there would have been no Hirukogami Ken or "Cybelle," and the subsequent lolicon doujinshi boom might not have happened. It is mysterious, or even like a divine trick, that so many great talents gathered in such a small store. When researching the history of Western art, there are many moments that can only be thought of as the will of God, when multiple geniuses are born in the same era, come together and blossom, and I witnessed a small-scale form of this. There should be a movie of this.

When I did exhange studies in Japan my uni's manga club had released doujinshi for 50 years. The first volume was published over 50 years ago, realizing that the people who made it had to now be in 70 year old always struck me, and that many of those who came after them have continued to contribute to making new books (including myself). Earliest books were drawn by hand, art styles were quote different and often experimental from what you see today, and the companies used for printing the copies no longer existed today. I'm genuinely jealous that such culture doesn't exist in my country or anywhere outside Japan to be honest.

>>280047657Early on, was all text in doujinshi handwritten out of necessity for lack of personal editing means? Nowadays everyone has a computer for clean typesetting. Not sure if there was a way to do that back then.
I was surprised to see so many meta jokes in the few 80s era doujinshi I read through. Pic not related but the broken 理性 got a chuckle out of me. Some stories were straight up ridiculous and some had more thought put into them. Not too different from now.
That's cool you got to experience that culture firsthand. Do share some fun/cool anecdotes.
>people who made it had to now be in 70 year oldI don't know about you, but I'd support a circle of gray old men if they still put stuff out.
>>280047788There are differences, the first and most important being no legal repercussions for selling doujinshi. Fanzines are done for free and I don't think there are huge events for them either.

>>280048323If you tried pulling that shit in the US you'd be sued, sentenced to prison, and forbid from ever holding a pencil again under threat of execution.
Parody carries such a different connotation in the US it might as well be something totally different.

>>280033206Panda is mainly about heterosexual ero doujins, which most people acknowledge is a minority of the market but also draws the crowds that buy everything.
Panda's got a very large amount of heterosexual ero doujinshi from years where they're palatable to masturbate to today, which is mainly what counts.
Azuma's ero stuff, for instance, has some funny bits to it that belie his talent for comedy gags but the way he draws nipples like bullet tips is extremely unsexy (yet typical of the time). It still makes me sad that he replaced the small gravure drawings he did in early AD editions with sanitized pin-ups.
>>280062041It's all X and fanbox now
>>280026317>no tagsGod why is creating artist and circle tags on e-h such a motherfucking pain in the ass?
>>280048323"Moon Channel" on youtube has a series of videos explaining it, but in short, Japanese copyright law is actually much LESS permissive then in the US.
In the US, if you allowed a few Mikey Mouse doujins, the court would rule that you don't give a fuck about Mickey Mouse copyright and so it is free real estate, meaning you would lose the ability to sue anyone over Mikey Mouse ever again.
In Japan you can always sue anyone for any reason, so companies can CHOOSE not to sue those who actually benefit them (doujins are free publicity) and only sue those that cause actual damage to their brand.
>>280063107This is also why Japanese fans often exhibit corporate bootlicking behavior and gang up on fellow fans who happen to break the unspoken rules. They live and die by the benevolence of the copyright holders, so they must fight to preserve the image of doujins being beneficial to the copyright.
>>280063107You'd think Nintendo would be way more sue happy with all the smut out there.
I don't go looking for Yoshi porn but I assume comikets are filled to the brim with that stuff.
>>280062577Azuma never compromising on his style of humor showed how he was always doing it for fun instead of trying to appease people who wanted only ero.

>>280062602There are online-only events now.
>>280063303Japanese employ what they call "zoning".
Yoshi smut is contained into specific R18 spaces and doesn't hurt Nintendo's family-friendly image in public.
How hard is it to make an itemized chart on Google docs? I want to make a list of every artist in this thread and their circle names.
Is there something like that already?
>>280033206Not just that, I don't think there is a public catalog of every single work published on comiket, ever.
>>280066141Zoning would create the opposite effect and bring those specific areas attention.
Unless they appoint generalized ero zones instead of by series.
>>280068300I remember reading that because of the nature of doujinshi there's no hope of getting any records into whatever Japan's Library of Congress equivalent is.
>>280068716There's no "zoning would...". It's been done for decades.
Man, it must be so fucking easy to learn how to draw in Japan with their lush environment BRIMMING with talent. They have an entire work ethic built around drawing you could probably learn by osmosis alone.
