Because Violet Evergarden was about actual emotionality and not cheap tiktok style tearjerker shit. Actual emotionality filters browns.

More cute girls, fantasyslop is more appealing than someone writing letters.

>why is this slow paced story about a retired crippled soldier who works for a pimped up post office less popular than a generic fantasy story with loud and colourful fight scenes, fanservice and easy to swallow morals?
I wonder.

Normies don't like sincere things, Frieren would not be as popular if it stay true to itself, it switches the genre to battle shounen with gags

Frieren was grown and produced in the lab to have as much mass appeal as it possibly could.
Also the timing of the airing really helped

Because Frieren is shounen in it's core aesthetics which appeals to a broader audience.
Personally I liked Violet Evergarden better - more beautiful art, better world building (at least not a standard isekai faux middle age).

Though, if we're talking about tearjerkers, VE solidly wins.
Frieren is standard shounen fantasy with a bit of mature sentimentality sprinkled in.
There was no truly sad scene in it, while VE has dozens. And the woman employing Violet to write birthday letters to her daughter is a league of its own....

Violet Evergarden was a classic Kyoani product. All style and no substance. Sure it had phenomenal production value but the plot was mediocre and the characters were fucking boring. The studio hasn't produced anything of note since Haruhi.

What "actual" emotionality are you talking about? Nothing what happens in this show makes any sort of sense, it's as surface level tearjerking as it can be. It's based purely off vibes of "what would normies consider sad and soulful" and just coasts on it until the end and you slurp it up. Notice how it's even more prevalent in the sequel where any character development gets swiftly discarded just so more extremely thin surface-level melodrama can be generated. It's genuinely one of the worst shows ever made

Its production value wasn't even anything to write home about. Aside from a couple seconds of sakuga every episode or two it just featured cowboy shots of people talking. At almost all times

I won't argue against this - VEG really seems to employ "forced" emotionality at some times.
But I still find it better than Frieren, though Frieren isn't bad - it's a good "baby's first anime" for newbies.

It didn't appeal to the same kind of audience, that's why. Normalfags (shounen manga readers) will always be a majority over waifufags.

The letter communication stuff is great, but then it goes into battle, and it's just cringe.

Frieren is successful because the people praising it started watching anime around covid and all they watch is isekai, and somehow Frieren was the isekai killer, true story.

Yea. What argument do you have to prove otherwise? VEG wasn't even successful by KyoAni standards. The movie is probably the most notable thing they have in terms of revenue.

Because Frieren has more action and sakuga.
Violet was more about romance and drama. Although it was perfect, only a select group of fans were able to truly enjoy it.
