Oh, god. Gainax spent so much leading up to the big battle of episode six that they didn't have enough money to animate it. So they gray scaled the entire episode and shot the pencil tests for the final battle as a montage hoping nobody would notice. You want to see over ambition wreck a show? I mean, how the hell were they supposed to film that madness and come in under time and budget restraints? They had easily twenty more minutes of material that they smooshed into like three.

Many believe the black&white was to "save money" but that was the opposite. It was more difficult to portray in shade of grey element that could no longer contrast naturally because the two color look the same in grey.

And yet, they did it. Also, it wasn't so much to save money as it was to cover for the fact that they didn't have enough in the first place. The battle section speaks for itself. It's obviously composed of expanded storyboards and pencil test animations.
