Horror can be very difficult to adapt into an anime, if they're off cue then it will shit the bed completely. Imo it also would need to fix a bit of the exposition so it doesn't feel like its dumped on you.

The manga is wildly popular and despite what some hardcore and whiny fujos will tell you it's really homosexual, so yes, it should be popular.

The reason some fujos dislike it is because the mangaka went out of her way to denounce the BL part with Xitter rants about how Hikaru can't feel romantic love. Most of the homo shit got toned down massively after the first volume or two when it got popular, too, and it was already somewhat sanitized between the original oneshot and the serialization.
I still like the series because I'm a starving eldritch horror enjoyer, but I get why fujoshi might feel betrayed desu.
