This show filters disingenuous people. It's supposed to be an action show with a lot of "aura farming" and acting cool, that's all it is and it does a great job at it. For years, people have complained that anime is too soft, protagonists refuse to kill, whine and cry a lot etc. Finally a show comes out where the protagonist kills people and acts unapologetically badass and suddenly everyone's too good for it. I don't get it. Stuff like this is easy to watch and highly rewatchable, Solo Leveling S2 had absolute top tier fights almost every episode, I rewatch them all the time. Meanwhile Dandadan is loved by everyone despite being the same crybaby numale shit as MHA and all the other gay ass shit.

I heard there's anti-Japanese sentiment in the original Solo Leveling and in a lot of manhwa. I understand why a lot of Koreans resent Japan, but I find it strange that they're expressing resentment in a literal rip-off of Japanese anime/manga, it comes across poorly to me. Manga was already a rip-off of comics and cartoons but at least they worked to make it their own style. I don't know, I'm ignorant about manhwa, but I wish I saw some that would at least try more unique art styles instead of generic anime look. Maybe it'll evolve with time, but I doubt it.

I think the concept of "aura farming" is pretty interesting in anime. It takes visual direction to the next level. Using high contrast, 2 tone coloring, heavily tinted scenes, very fast paced animation, it's very Shinbo-esque, watch any episode of Yuyu Hakusho that Shinbo directed, it has all this stuff, high contrast, morphing forms, fisheyes and stuff. I think it's a good thing that animators are trying to do more "aura farming" I think it encourages highly stylized, cohesive animation styles that mediocre shonen of the late 2010s usually lacked. Look at Dragon Ball Super for example, this is a weird one because on the one hand there is a lot of aura farming, a lot of flexing powerups, and you see the rudimentary beginnings of animators trying to use stylized effects to enhance the aura. But DBS was pretty shit in the long run, didn't try hard enough to be stylized, ended up lacking artistic cohesion. I'm glad that animators are finally taking stylized digital animation seriously.

Obviously there were storytelling artworks in Japan and Korea, and probably many examples of proto-manga/manhwa too, but the format of modern manga is based on American comics. Rip-off wasn't the best word, it's more inspired by, but I'm just saying that Japanese are known to often take things from other cultures and adapt it to fit their tastes, and in the process something uniquely Japanese is made. I'm a die hard dragon ball fan I've seen every iteration of dragon ball and I have to say only DBS Broly and Daima really has fights as good as Solo Leveling. Solo leveling has really good fights, wild amount of back and forth, crazy camera work, very well animated powers, good sword and blade shit
