I think the fight was meant to give both sides what they wanted. Sukuna appeals to people with "win no matter what" type of personalities, and Gojo appeals to prideful people. Gojo lost because he thought he was winning at the moment and was caught off guard by the sudden BV WCS and died with a smile and then reconciled with Geto. Basically both sides won.

Watching Gege kill off the character who caused his series to succeed offscreen and have one of his own students puppet his corpse for a laugh, baiting his fans into a false sense of hope that he may yet live, then dropping the body off as if it were nothing and not even mentioning him then after or referencing the event, the death of the pinnacle of the sorcery world was a truly humbling thing to watch. My decades of bitter angst were made to look like nothing next to this utterly self destructive display of pure loathing directed to ones own creation, to the people who loved and supported you and your work both spiritually and financially. It reminds me of that scene in Futurama where Bender kicks his own son into the pits of hell in exchange for an army.
