At the very least, stuff like him and Ienari bankrupting the shogunate with their opulent lifestyle or Sadanobu being fired for refusing to give him his stupid title are historical. This coupled with the lucky string of deaths allowing Ienari to become shogun paints a certain image of the character.

Given that there was an outbreak of the weakened form at Dejima that Aonuma survived I wondered if that meant the rest of the world has the weakened mutant form. I guess that would be a really suspect moral at the end, that if Japan had just been open the disease would have been no big deal - tell that to the American Indians.
