Dumb anime pretending to be smart typically have legions of pseuds gushing over it. Actually smart anime tend to be pretty niche, because they're honestly either pretty boring or unironically a lot of mental work. Smart doesn't necessarily mean good, the world could use more pacific rims.

You have to make it "a feel good"

It's like those old movies that feel good to watch. They weren't very deep or complex storytelling, they were linear and felt honest. It was complex. But linearly complex.

Also there aren't really any "smart" anime. There are cool anime but a "smart" anime is a term only engfaggot would come up with to make themselves feel better about their useless college degree. In reality Good anime/tv means edging the viewer with complexity, but keeping the story simple.

To me it's anime that trusts the viewer. I was surprised when I watched immoral guild because I feel like the humor in it is actually done quite well compared to a lot of others and it trusts the viewer to piece things together themselves.

For example, there's a gag where one of the characters gets a little flustered over a girl's body and compares her thighs to a storebought ham. A few episodes later the cast is at his house and one of the girls opens his fridge to see nothing but ham (pic related), which got a healthy chuckle out of me. She grabs what she needs and continues on. If this were ANY other anime, she would explain the joke like I'm a fucking retard:
