Unironically by staying in school. Even after putting on the Sander Mans implant and beating the shit out of the school superintendent's son, he was welcomed back because he was a prime candidate to try out their cool new exoskeleton thing he used in the series finale.

I watched this for the first time recently. David was being level headed when the gang had the big shot Arasaka guy kidnapped. The big guy was losing his mind, but he and Lucy was convincing them to continue. If the gang had listened to David, the big guy would've survived and they could've gone back to making small mercenary jobs.

The another point was when David was the gang leader. He could've honored Lucy's wish and they could've used their money to fuck off to the moon. But at that point David's perspective had twisted to the point of a legendary Edgerunner.

The third point was to listen to the rowdy teen girl, take off some chrome and not take the big gig with the dealer. Any of these would've worked. They would've likely died in some shootout, but not all get wiped out all at once.

The theme is that all runners die in time. This comes from the source material being a RPG that puts characters that can do huge amounts of damage against enemies that can do huge amounts of damage and leads to lots of characters eventually dying due to balance being a bit on the deadly side.
The game wouldn't be fun if runners only took easy jobs, and even if they did eventually an easy job turns into a trap, someone just makes a bad roll and causes a huge problem.

David was done from the start because he was a character in a deadly game world.

David had a perfect girlfriend wife in Rebecca, she was loyal and actually loved him, unlike Lucy who got spooked and distanced herself from him even when he started having massive issues. They were already a good group, and now that the biggest chrome head was gone, they had more eddies to go around. If the game is played fair enemies should have as good or better weapons and equipment when a player encounters the main foe for a job. While you shouldn't ever get one shot, you might get one rounded by enough lucky enemies.

Her death makes narrative sense, shows the audience its not a typical heros journey plot.
The scene shows the progression of mental decay and it sets up the ending since innocent people who get a happy ending usually dont kill good people.
I guess it sorta ties into the overall theme of cp, the individuals always lose and the city wins. From her perspective David is part of the city who eats people whole.
