>>280164464Different anon, but to add to this, she's also nice to follow because while she does have some shoujoisms, they're sensible for her character and circumstances. She's the illegitimate daughter of a high-ranking noble, but the circumstances behind her birth and properly defined traumatic moments (i.e., her mother hacking off her pinky as a baby which she interpreted as trying to kill her, that incident with Lakan as a child she had to unravel like 3 layers of misunderstanding with, etc.). She's disinterested in turbo-bishounen Jinshi, but it stems from significant and surprisingly reasonable hangups wrt social status due to her upbringing, ancient Chinese environment, and especially the situation surrounding Lakan and much of her supposed disinterest is just heavy repression of her attraction to him. She's intelligent and has a lot of esoteric knowledge that shouldn't be possible for a girl of her standing, but she's not infallible and fucking sucks at anything other than the sciences and deductive reasoning and what she does know explicitly comes from Luomen aka the scholar who made Lakan great and has gathered all kinds of knowledge from abroad. She's a quirky medicine autist but at its root is a goal she's dedicated her life to (creating a panacea). I could go on. For all of KnH's flaws, the early portions and Maomao's character are really well thought out. She feels complete in a way a lot of other female LN protagonists, and LN protagonists in general desu, don't.
