Does manga have any literary masterpieces? I'm not talking about your childish joke of a battle shonen. I mean works that people will be reading in a hundred years.

This. The Illiad and the Odyssey are just battle shonens. The Epic of Gilgamesh too.

Nope. Manga is, without a single exception, slop. There are a handful of DECENT slop. Itโ€™s like comic books; can you say there are any MASTERPIECES? Thereโ€™s a few famous and interesting ones like Civil War, Identity Crisis and Killing Joke, but these do NOT come into the category of literature, let alone a masterpiece.

Then you'll likely get very few. As many posts above have stated already, many so called "classic literature masterpieces" regarded today as such had mass appeal and fame. They were the capeshits and shounenshits of their times.

Only the Iliad and Gilgamesh have anything in common with capeshit/shounenshit aesthetically, and all of those besides LotR are regarded as such because barely anything else survived. Is Gone With The Wind the capeshit of the 1930s? Or was it Superman?

Yeah, but. Just imagine.
There are many anime everyone hypes today that for all we know will be forgotten in a year. No one knows what will stay. By random chance, it's Elfen Lied. Every couple 10 years someone will check what that retro anime with the gore was about. Somehow 1000 years someone will be doing that and its fame survives like that. Woah...

>And why do you think it's so?
It's a fact. The vast majority of what has survived from antiquity remains only in disjointed fragments, proving these texts once existed but no longer do.
>I don't think a 1000 years from now people might be talking about that much
People are still talking about Gone With The Wind whereas Superman is already a historical curiosity at most. Of course, Citizen Kane has vastly more staying power than either, which further buries capeshit's significance along with mass appeal.

I'm talking about the '30s comics, obviously. As widespread as the Iliad is, it's generally understood to not be the original version. La Morte is famous but no one gives a shit about the Welsh myths. etc.

>it's proven fact
You seems to not get my actual point.
Or you do but staying willfully ignorant for arguments sake.
Here's another fact, many of these older classics got many many versions and retellings completely different from another, that we don't even know 100% what might be the original text or canon. For instance in some versions of Mahabharata, Karna was portrayed as a rapist murderer driven by envy towards his brother(which is theorized to be his actual original personality) while some versions portray him as a noble misunderstood warrior(which is what Fate used and what many modern depictions use). Does that sound familiar?
>Gone with the Wind
>Citizen Kane
They are only talked about in a few niche circles.
I don't think the average joe even knows about these.
>Superman is already a historical curiosity at most
Are you talking about the movie?
Yeah probably because there is like a dozen or other retellings and versions closer to present.
