Is possible to write a harem which is more about the MC being simply a plot device to tell the story of each girl being the MC of their own character arc and story, and have the harem being nothing more than a tree of stories?

Something similar to how the MC in haruhi susumiya is nothing but an excuse for the writer to have the reader to self insert as a blank slate character who the other characters react to?

That's kinda how Tenchi Muyo works, with the MCs being fairly boring and all the girls having complex backstories and personalities.
