I don't think you can make that argument when the whole point is to experience the full spectrum of his pointless thoughts.
Of course there's no substance in watching him try to figure out which shampoo he should buy or how he perceives the social dynamics around him, but it humanizes him and lets him express himself similarly to someone meticulously describing the smell of a girl they went on a date with in their diary.
If someone wanted to create a setting with a comparably dense lexical structure, they'd probably opt for another medium like film, anime or manga.
