In my country it was one of the first commercially-available anime with Dragon Ball, Captain Tsubasa, and Sailor Moon

Generic crap is usually what becomes the most successful. Inuyasha also had a lot of really fucking gay designs that appealed to femcels, so it ended up appealing to a very large demographic with zero standards.

Others have listed some decent reasons, but it's worth considering that when it came out it didn't exactly have a lot of competition. Inuyasha is pretty great in general, but when you have a solid show that also doesn't have much competition you end up getting an easy hit.

I would also add on that when it was released it was pretty unique being based on feudal Japan and showcasing Japanese monsters.

people meme about how it's just the same thing over and over, but that episodic nature made it easy to just jump in and watch random episodes of it when it was airing on tv. each character has an extremely clear personality that you understand within a few seconds of watching them, which makes it even simpler to understand. it being on adult swim made it accessible to more people. it had a lot of erotic designs and the dynamic of "overpowered demon MC + school girl who has control over him" is fun, plus the isekai element was still fresh at the time and didn't devolve into narou-kei dogshit: kagome served purely as our window into the world of the show, rather than as an overpowered hero that everyone has to jerk off.
also as >>280201453 said it did pretty good showing a lot of japanese culture, and it didn't have a 4kids type dub that tried to hide it so there was that too.

I would also argue the timing of it. As someone who did watch it, I watched it before school. Inuyasha would air between 5-6am for me going right in to yugioh so between late night airing an reruns it was pretty accessible as a morning cartoon

This. The initial Adult Swim run is what made it such a titan. Inuyasha was a slightly more adult anime that aired at a time when early-to-mid teen audiences that loved Toonami were seeing it go younger while they got older. Same channel, later at night, with all the qualities described in >>280201392 with a lot of advertisement and two episodes a night. Perfect place, perfect time, perfect audience.

In the US, it was part of Adult Swim when Cartoon Network launched the bloc, so it had a lot of exposure and a built in audience coming from Toonami.
Also it good.
