These types of MCs are the worst. At least the usual generic MCs are honest with their design. No embarrassing vapid attempt to look 'oh so cynical and laid back'.

Unless I'm misunderstanding OP, Ryuji is not the same thing in the slightest. He doesn't look cynical or tired, his eyes are supposed to look scary and people think he's a delinquent from it. A plot point that's completely dropped quite quickly (at least in the anime) but that's another discussion...
I don't know for certain what started that trope, but I'd guess it's descended from Angel Densetsu.
In any case it's seems very unrelated to what OP is talking about.
