i'm kinda tired of seeing the same wrong opinions on imgboards and forums about Crunchyroll and subs so here's a few facts - anonymous of course so I don't get accused of breaking NDA (I left CR right before the merger layoffs but still)

- sometimes Crunchyroll gets subs from licensors, and they're **prohibited** from adjusting them, per contract. any alterations (and the involved costs) must be approved by Japan in these cases
- the Yuzuki Family incident, the Nokotan incident, the infamous "Shisogapo" sign in Charlotte, those are all cases of licensor-provided subs. Crunchyroll can relay complaints to the licensor and convince them to fix things but not always
- the recent incidents with Necronomico and Lord of the Mysteries are different - these AI-translation companies have been hired by CR directly in an effort to cut costs, to test their output
- CR localization members uploaded the subs as-is, betting that the general response would be so bad that would steer leadership away from AI-translation
- the CR CEO has investments in a number of AI translation companies and often tries to profit from CR through them (see: closed caption issues)
- you can tell if a sub has been done inhouse or not by looking at the main font - Trebuchet for inhouse, Arial for 3rd party (at least for EN, not sure for other languages)
- the best thing you can do is flood support with complaints, since those are always accounted/relayed to leadership and used as pressure; people that only complain on the internet but do not post tickets are seen as "pirates who wouldn't pay anyway"

Why not just NEVER use subs provided by Japan? Their reputation suffers because they are totally fine with relying on sketchy subcontractors (Japan in this case).

I've seen that argument before on either xitter or bsky, but that seems to be a very, very generous take.
>they're **prohibited** from adjusting them, per contract
True, but they always have the choice not to publish them at all.

AI translation is fine if it's accurate. The problem is we get subs that are inaccurate regardless of what/who does it.

two reasons: a) they "pay" for part of the localization and b) they want control over how the show is done. When the licensor is someone like Toei or Aniplex with decades of experience in the market, it's less of an issue. but some new companies often fall victim of bad translation companies, or want to cut costs and sacrifice quality

as for the rest of the complaints: Nokotan was licensed via REMOW and other platforms that licensed the show via REMOW had similar issues, same for Charlotte (Aniplex). it's almost public at this point

Yeah, and my point is that it's a better choice when the subtitles are this abhorrent. Nobody can enjoy the show anyway, and even if the management hates anime and anime fans it's still a PR disaster. No harm done if another licensor takes it, only more headache for them.

it's hard. dealing with licensors involve nurturing relationships. if you say 'no' to a demand without good reason, even for a minor show, you can risk that relationship for a long time (and lose a big title in the horizon)

letting it explode on the users' face and getting leverage to negotiate is just good business practice unfortunately

Whoa, such liars!
>On the hot-button issue of AI, Purini said the company stands with creators in Japan and elsewhere striving to maintain authenticity in production. “We are not considering AI in the creative process, including our voice actors. We consider them to be creators because they are contributing to the story and plot with their voice.”
>He added the company is looking at AI and machine learning in back-end systems to improve content discoverability, recommendations and personalization, but only as ways to improve the customer experience and not touching on the content itself.
>"We spend a lot of time interacting with fans, listening to them, understanding what they're saying and taking that feedback not only back to our creators in Japan but also internally to determine how we can better serve them,” Purini says.

These are, like we say in my memecountry "patadas de ahogado" (drown man kicks) aka useless and desperate measures, These fuckers made their own bed, now sleep on it you dumbfucks. For years we have to endure smug bastars changing anime works because it didnt fit with their worldviews and agendas, now that the viewership is fed up with them, the japanese studios protested those unsolicited changes, and they are being replaced woth AI, now they feel compelled to "protest"
And you know what add insult to injury? they surely thought that they were smart choosing a "good series" for their protest, only to find out that the series is shit anyways. Its like spitting on a shit sandwich hoping that people would not eat it.
Anyway, I expect the "protesters" to be GTFO. The AI subtitles and localization is here to stay. For them it sure is shocking to find out that actions have consequences.
