Oh this is a real thing. Its obviously very, very rare now, but starting from a very young age we were always thought to avoid picking up red envelopes or toys that were discarded in the streets. This I believe is part of the reason why in Taiwan people tend to not pick up lost things in public places (unless it's to hand over to the police).

While it ultimate doesn't really matter, I should point out that Taiwan doesn't use pinyin at all. In fact, most people probably have a distaste for it, since it's stigmatized as being a main lander thing (which is not true, since pretty much everywhere else that speaks mandarin teaches pinyin.) Taiwan is the only place on the planet AFAIK that uses zhuyin, and we're brainwashed by the RoC to think that somehow it is more legitimate (for being Chinese, whatever that means) than pinyin. The benefit for pinyin is obviously that it seems closer to alphabet so in a sense it's easier to read for foreigners, but this also lead to horrendous pronunciation because they're pronouncing the words as if they're English, for example. Zhuyin is obviously foreign so it forces new learners to treat it as such and can lead to better differentiation, but it's also a lot harder to learn.

Thanks as usual. The author must have visited Taiwan or read up on our modern urban legends, which are quite plenty. Other common ones include the little girl in red (which has a movie series made, too. I also believe it inspired Alma from FEAR the video game series), disc jin (碟仙 similar to a oujia board), and the mountain goblins (魔神仔）.
