You know what I would write in this genre to make it not trash? Consider a Fate/Stay scenario, except the Damsel of Dark Distress isn’t a 10/10 stacked JK who calls the MC “senpai” while wanting nothing more than cook him dinner — she’s, instead, a 4/10 glammed up, overweight older girl with a chip on her shoulder who delights in her sudden status shift to Damsel believing she now gets a Hero boyfriend. The story wouldn’t be so much about the girl, but about how much the Shirou figure is willing to sacrifice and stand by his code of the Hero which is supposed to be everything to him. All the other hot female characters don’t consider the Damsel to be a threat to them so treat her lightly while they try to grab the Hero, which pisses off the Damsel who makes demands on the Hero in return. This would be a test of the audience as much as the Hero, making them face their in-built prejudice for looks and real-world psychology. It’s easy to be a Hero when the Damsel is a 10/10 waifu, but how much of a man are you REALLY when put to the test? Will he give up being the Hero and focus on himself and the things he wants, or will be protect the role of Hero no matter what?
