Alright, I have a few questions for people who've already read this, but for most of them I'm fine with just being told whether or not there IS an answer for the question.
Do we ever find out what happens if they run out of time before finishing a mission?
When people who die get brought to the room, is it right away, or can time pass between them dying and showing up there?
Is there an explanation for how people get chosen to be recruited, or is it literally just anyone who died within a certain area in a certain timeframe before a mission starts?
Do people who survived get any kind of notification for when the next mission is? I vaguely remember in the anime there being at least one scene where it seemed like Nishi could tell, but I don't know if that scene was in the manga or not, and I can't really recall more details about it.
The second question is the only one I really want to know the answer right now. Again, the rest I'm fine with just being told if they will be answered later in the manga.

Its genius how it only activates a moment after the trigger is pressed. Characters can do cool poses while the aliens explode behind them, theres always a moment of anticipation if they actually hit anything or not etc. Great way to create some dramatic moments.

If they run out of time, they get teleported back and all their points are gone. There might be some lag when teleporting, but they have to be dead almost instantly as they teleport. There isn't explanation for whos selected, but there seems to be a bias towards people with unusual skills whenever possible. Even the first mission we got a bunch of Yakuza with guns. Might be random, might be more selective. Gantz isn't a stupid process, after all. All people who survive get a notification, sometimes they get teleported pretty much instantly depending on the mission and how severe the situation is. They just ''feel it''. They wear their battle clothes under their real clothes after a while, since you never know.

The rest of your questions are not answered. I didn't finish the manga...i think... I remember the giant world and some sort of "God room" around ch. 300? Anyway, the manga was fun, Kurono is my hero and Nishi's a fag. Kato gets the hang of it eventually.

The author's ability to draw some stunningly beautiful women is canon. Kishimoto's story provides a nice twist, but nothing more.

Second, despite having the physical manga with me, i never got to read it, and in the meantime i watched the two movies. I feel they did a big disservice in the first movie not addressing the clone thing, even then, i liked it a lot. Gantz is grimdark frequently so it needs people like Katou to provide levity. Also, it'd be hard to get into a death-game story if we didn't want the protagonists to survive, and it's easy to root for Katou. We wouldn't root for Kei if not for his fantastic (unironic) character development.

It doesn't bring everyone back right away, so there's probably a window of time until you're considered dead dead and not just mostly dead like Kato was. So as long as you come back before the retrieval time is finished, which you probably would if you were only dead for 10 seconds, you'd presumably get brought back to the room and healed.
