I like all the demihuman/animalgirl shit in the Arknights verse, but gachashit being gachashit is just too hard to care for. I pretty much lost interest when I finished S2 and realized the whole thing is just a modern toy commercial that constantly throws a new character at you every episode. No intent to develop or do anything interesting with them, just show the audience new character they're supposed to get excited for and gamble for in the game. Every gacha story would be better if it wasn't bogged down with being from a gacha.

I was into the gacha since release, BUT over the last year or so the story progression has really faltered badly. Everything is some sort of side-story now or building up to some future event and it’s heavily dragged me out of the world-building which used to be its strong suit.

Your assessment is completely correct, the only exception I can think of is Takt Op Destiny, and that's purely because it's a rare case where the anime came out before the gacha. (It was supposed to be a prequel to it I think.) Coincidentally the gacha died nearly immediately after releasing, so that pretty much tells you everything about the audiences for these games.

"Adaptation of an existing gacha" (Arknights, PriConne, Magia Record, etc.) and "original anime that sets up and advertises a future gacha" (Takt Op, Toji No Miko, Revue Starlight, etc.) aren't really the same thing. The former usually re-tells part of the game's story, the latter usually tells its own story as a prequel to the game but can often stand alone as its own thing.

It doesn't matter if you have to roll for them or not, the entire thing is the definition of character bloat where a bunch of literal whos get introduced to you, do one or two cool things, and then get cycled out for the next ones. The anime wants to show off everyone, since they're all part of the game, but this translates horribly into an animated story with limited run time. Off the top of my head-

You could cut out most if not all of these characters and the story wouldn't change at all since all they do is have scenes where they wail on some mooks and then disappear. It's a waste of screentime that makes the story feel choppy and drain needed time from the characters that actually matter in these storylines. You're right that I haven't played the game and this story would probably be better if I got to experience it through the original medium first. But I ended up watching the anime first, and even without the bias of having played the game I can still feel how much it gets dragged down from being attached to a gacha.

Nah writing is good sometimes. Especially in events. Main story feels very bloated in early chapters since they wanted to introduce too much too fast.

Either way, you seem to be implying the Main theme "gets better" (amusing how every single gacha fanbase says this) but I am of the opinion the Londinium arc is even worse because of how retarded it is and how contrived so much of the actions taken are: It's like they forget they're no longer just pixiv artists and can't just impose rule of cool by just saying so. The distinction between the main theme and the events make shit even worse because nothing ever gets resolved and you're always strung along (maybe I shouldn't blame them too hard since it's a gacha game made to go on for as long as possible, but it still sucks), and the actual experience of reading the narrative is awful, torturous, tedium.

The only good thing of this was S1's ED. I dropped it too, because it was kinda boring, just suffering prion, and to top it all to promote a game, a gacha at that. I've always felt this a little and I'm glad someone else noticed. Arknights is definitely a grimdark setting when you get down to it, but as a gacha game it's got a colorful character cast. Most of whom (The playables at least) will never have anything bad happen to them since status quo needs to be retained for rolling purposes. Which gets even weirder when you consider that being infected is literally a terminal illness (That kills you in an incredibly gory, body horror-esque way) that the majority of Rhodes Island has. An illness that some of them purposely accelerate with Originium Arts too. It really contrasts with the "Cute animal girls in tacticool gear fighting for you" aspect, but I guess that's what makes it stand out for some people?
