Why don't people care much about the quality of dialogue in manga and anime? In other media, writers are dragged over the coals for exposition, cringe jokes, and characters all sounding the same, but manga and anime seem to get a pass and I'm not sure why.

Okay, but why dialogue specifically? Otaku care about art, worldbuilding, and story structure. They DESPISE most manga/anime endings and constantly complain about them. But I've never once heard an otaku complain about the dialogue in manga/anime.

theres not exactly a lot of literary analysis in the anime community. also, i am willing to blame a lot of this on translations. japanese and the romance languages have nothing in common, so there will be transliteration errors in any attempt.

that being said, yes, the quality of dialogue is typically lower than you'd expect.
translated light novels read the same way to me. they seem juvenile, with limited vocabulary and strange phrasing. i read a lot of European and American fiction as well. novelists sre just better writers than Japanese light novelists, imo.

A Japanese LN has more in common with a Western YA novel, I'd say they're on par with each other. I don't know anyone dekiru enough at japanese who's actually read a Natsume Soseki novel or a Murakami novel in Japanese

A lot of anime rely more on visuals and abstract ideas rather than dialogue. Look at the ending of Paprika where after all that crazy shit happens nobody says a word and nothing is explained. People more often complain that the story is just dumb or confusing. There aren't tons of anime with horrible exposition/dialogue like Recreators.

I'm surprised that no one's mentioned it, but fundamentally in anime, unless you're like 0.001% population of English native anime watchers, you're most likely watching a translation and therefore any "bad" dialogue often gets swept up under the rug because of that. You can't say a show has bad dialog when you fundamentally didn't understand a single word of it, and are simply viewing one specific persons interpretation of said dialog. Just today we had half a thread discussing this line and what version of it's 3 very different translations are best. You can get wildly different viewing experiences from going raw, [SubsPlease] or [Commie].

Tbh, half the time I hear that an ln novelist is flowery and poetic, using constant word play, and the other half I hear that its YA tier, no actual substance, child writing.
I feel like they would probably be use eccentric vocabulary and reading considering they're chuuni fucks, but it's a little aggravating not being able to tell if someone is just being a catty hater.

I am dekiru enough to read manga and even struggle through old LNs but real literature is just too hard. Basic literacy is a lot easier than real fluency and I doubt even 1% of EFL gaijin who could adequately translate an average anime episode could do the same for Souseki

One of my dreams when I started learning Japanese a year ago was to become profficient enough to read Soseki in Japanese and a bunch of other Meiji and Taisho era writers which I read in English.

Because most of the dialogue depends on which translator is on the series and not anything to do with the original author's dialogue. That is why 3 anime with a similar level of vocbulary will all read differently if it got 3 different translators, since there isn't an interest in being faithful to the original text. Basically nobody has to care about the dialogue because they all know it isn't real anyways.

Unfortunately, translators and localizers typically have piss-poor writing skills, so even when they do try to "punch up" the dialogue, the result still ends up pretty shit most of the time.
