Anime stoppped from having cute girls in it to being about cute girls. The same with sakuga or fight scenes, they turned from cool, additional features that supported the story to the centerpiece of anime today. Newfags are not the same people watching anime back then for the same reasons, they're here primairly for instant gratification and self-insert fantasies over a deep interest and passion into the medium.
