Why are Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, and Madoka Magica the only magical girl series that have ever been popular with boys?

Because two of the three you listed were on regular tv.
And Madoka was just considered good, so people watched it.
So uhh, accessibility I guess?

Usagi and Sakura are hot.
Madoka because of crying magical girls.

Anyways, watching Sailor Stars rn, it had a pretty good intro and... uh, yeah that's it so far. Why was this not in SuperS in the first place?
The SOL lacks some spice, Starlights mostly feel like a worse version of outers, why is every fight literally exactly the same? The fuck is a chibi-chibi?
Hopefully it redeems itself at the end, Galaxia promises to be an interesting and extremely powerful villain. Oh well, at least I don't have to watch Chibiusa talking with a horse or some shit.

Symphogear also counts as magical girl show.
Minky Momo and all it's 80s clones basically kickstarted idol industry.

That's just from top of my high on oxitocin head. Try to watch more anime, faggot.

More series need their own magical girl spin-off.
Reminds me of the Higurashi Kira episode where Rika and Satoko become MGs, and straight up shout "make up" in their transformation sequences.

Usagi growing up in a high schooler throughout the series but still acting the same will never not be funny. She is probably exactly the same at whatever age Princess Serenity is, they sure hint that might be the case.

she's 16 at the end. Queen Serenity's age was never stated but she's implied to be in her 30s. Neo Queen Serenity (Future Serena) is over a century old because of the infinite youth but was in her 20s when she stopped aging.

she acts like a little kid even in the future, when Chibiusa comes back from the future for S, she includes a letter explaining the situation to the past Scouts and it's written like how a child would write. awful handwriting, no kanji. The girls even make fun of Usagi for not growing up in the future.

it is. the original isn't specifically set in 1992, it's set "in the modern day" which when the manga was written meant 1992. Crystal is also set "in the modern day" which translates to the late 2010s when the anime was made. Nothing about the series specifically precludes it from being set in 201x.

Absolutely, but it got a little better as you approach the last 10 eps, now only those are left for me. Can't hold a candle to S, let alone R and original, but it wins the "better than SuperS" pity award so far.
The reboots got the right idea by turning Eternal and Cosmos into movies as opposed to entire seasons, that's the kind of narrative you want to end in 1 hour, maybe 2 at best. The 90s anime dropped the ball really hard with these two.

SuperS could've been made 20% better if they had just had the occasional episode of Uranus and Neptune doing their thing. There was no excuse for them being MIA for an entire season. you can at least argue that Pluto was presumed dead and Saturn was a baby.

So far if somebody wants to get into the Sailor Moon 90s show, I would tell them this:
Original and R are essential and give you the full picture of everything Sailor Moon is about and had to offer. S is a bit of an extra with a bunch of highs, but also some noticeable lows especially if you were attached to the inner senshis, you should continue if you really want to see more but you are past its prime already.
Anything beyond that is dragging it for people who really, really, REALLY need more Usagi in their lives.

I'd drop the first season, the first arc of R tells a truncated version of it in the first half dozen or so episodes. The rest of the season is the same tone but done in a tighter and better-animated manner. if you like R, then watch S. no reason to watch anything else unless you really fall for the series.

The Moon Kingdom lore is also very important, and you probably want to see the origins of Usagi x Mamoru. Also the DD girls fight is a big moment that gets referenced instantly in R. But that aside, first season is very enjoyable all the way through, there is no real reason skip it.
I would say S is the first one where genuinely it feels like additional content as opposed to a continuation, but the content in question is nice so if you like Sailor Moon you should go for it. Now SuperS and Stars, on the other hand...

R gives a clifsnotes rundown of all that because of the circumstances of the ending of the first season (Toei didn't think it would be popular enough to warrant a S2, so wrote it such that S1 was fully self-contained). Because all the girls (and the audience) need to be brought up to speed again, pretty much the entire Doom Tree of Might saga exists as a refresher course.

remember, we're talking about what's the best introductory to the series for someone who isn't sure if they're interested, not "what are the most important seasons/episodes". That's why I say tell someone to watch R first, because it's the most 'complete' as a single season. if they like it, then S. if those two got them hooked on the series for real, then I'd tell them to watch S1. if they still are interested and want to see how the series ends, then Stars. I'd only recommend SuperS if the person in question REALLY likes Chibiusa.

>we're talking about what's the best introductory to the series
> watch R first, because it's the most 'complete' as a single season.
If you ask me, the most "complete" isn't necessarily the best intro. Part of the enjoyment of an intro comes from watching how things get established at first and later develop over time, R isn't enough since Usagi gets the other senshis back all at once and pretty much instantly, then they go straight into continuning their dynamics from the first season.
R works very well as a sequel with a lot of meat, both with new dynamics and working with what was already there, but if I don't think I would be able to appreciate it as much without having watched OG first.
>I'd only recommend SuperS if the person in question REALLY likes Chibiusa.
Going to agree with this one. Even if you are into Sailor Moon already it might be a good idea to ignore it entirely. Hell even if you like Chibiusa(and I don't, she is better in the manga story I hear, but in the show she is sort of inconsistent and really forced) you might dislike SuperS for doing nothing of note outside of giving her a moment with the pegasus, who you might not find not really compelling by himself as well.
Stars will be awkward since the first thing you see is Nehellenia coming back to torture Usagi but mind you, that will be the most compelling her character will ever be. You are actually going to be disappointed if you watch SuperS to see wtf was her deal.
