>The internet commentary refuses to age.
>Even up to now when the episode says "Present day. Present time" it actually feels as accurate as it did 27 years ago, if not more so.

Happy goddamn anniversary you fucking masterpiece.

Boomers saw the internet as something completely new.
They went from pen pals to straight-up emails in just a blink of an eye. It is understandable that they would treat it like some kind of magic.

And no, Lain, despite all the pseuds praising it, is not really accurate nor really groundbreaking. It's just people inserting their interpretation into subversive media
It is a great show, no doubt, but it's really it is less of a social commentary, and more of a horror show where a girl ascended to godhood by killing the old god. This kind of horror is actually common in jap horror like Silent Hill and Fatal Frame.
The commentaries about people being addicted to the internet and being separated from reality were just passed over without any real depth in discussions

Yeah, right. What about that sequence where Lain busted Alice rubbing it out to her teacher, put her on blast and ruined her life? How many times has something like that scenario went on to ruin a quaint suburban town with scandal?

Before the internet rumors would spring up and die off. Then about 1996 everyone saved the files.

It's made surreal for effect but, damn if it ain't there.

Lain's like MGS2, if you were paying attention to the nascent internet you could already see what was going wrong.

Let's not forget the whole "Wired personality" concept. I don't think I've ever talked to a real persons' real personality on the internet. I have only ever talked to their wired personality. I'm the same way I never talk about anime to anyone offline. On 4chan, it's pretty much all I do!

Onlyfans and Fansly makes it very different.

Wait, what?
Lain never did anything.
The rumor just spread on its own, regardless of the presence of the internet or not. And it wasn't a "rumor", Alice confessed that she has a crush, but the telephone game went wrong and it got blown out of proportion

It's ambiguous. We don't know for sure if she was dreaming of her teacher, or if she was having an affair with him. It all depends if the images in her mind during sequence where she is masturbating is a fantasy or a flashback.

That "internet personality" was not even deep nor should it be deep. It's our true personality -our inner monologue. Lain gave no commentary but instead exaggerated it with evil Lain...which the show seems to be aware as stupid. Lain as a person is a good girl, and the evil persona makes no sense; otherwise, it would reflect on her real self, one way or another. Thus, they just made it like a split persona that Lain have no memories of

Arguably, it had a deeper discussion in Cromatie High where the Banchou of the school is a polite moderator of an anonymous image board, and his underling was the troll who's been terrorizing the board
He is pissed and struggled at the fact that cannot just punch the guy

It could be that wired Lain existed before good Lain, that good Lain was the act.

I miss the poster who made dozens of threads about Lain being autistic in increasingly broken English like a decade ago.
