Yeah first few episodes are some weird minimalistic torture porn, then it becomes a shitty mob movie with no characters. I'm honestly shocked that this is acclaimed; maybe because it appears "mature" on the surface and teens who just discovered anime which aren't battle shounen are drawn to that. I just finished episode 11 and there's literally a scene of a gay man fucking his adult son. Who comes up with this stuff?

The last anime I watched before this, Planet With, involves an anthropomorphic cat and dog and people transforming into clay mecha and yelling super attacks out loud. And it's 10000% more mature and complex than Texhnolyze.

Texhnolyze is one of those few shows I've watched where I have to say, objectively, it's really well done even though personally I don't like it.

Depends on what you care about. ABe is more manga artist and writer than a director, and Haibane Renmei is out of them all by far the worst directed. But if you want a character story and character writing then I get why you'd like it the most despite that.
Lain on the other hand, you should get why people with a more 'visual medium' bent continue to hold it in high regard.
