When watching I actually did get the impression from Kuuya's (blonde) backstory that he was gay and outed by that girl he turned down and friends, hence why he dropped out and was closed off to women. It felt like they wanted to write yuri, but were only allowed to write one-sided het romantic feelings to make the bond of the girls stronger and more meaningful in comparison.
