Although it's so incredibly inferior to the 90s show it's not even funny.

Everyone did, but then they didn't properly adapt the manga either and the animation and production was Toei at its worst (roughly the same time as Dressrosa One Piece for example) If they had started it today instead of 10 years ago or whenever it was it would be significantly better.

There's a few things that are consistent across every iteration of Sailor Moon.
One of them is Mamoru having a doofy Tuxedo Kamen doll. Another is Chibi-Usa drawing a pistol on her mom.

I hated R in Chibi Usa's arcnot just because she sucks in general (It's not nearly as bad as Super S) but because they needed to artificially create drama by having Mamoru tell his past self that he has to break up with Usagi and be a dick, because otherwise they wouldn't be able to work out when their relationship turned REALLY rocky. And the funniest part is, it never fucking does!

No one who actually read Sailor Moon and has a brain cell would be asking for a faithful adaptation. There are some things that Naoko Takeuchi is great at, like creating general premises and story engines, designs and vibes. But she can't plot or write a story for shit; the Toei animation built on everything good she created and made something amazing.
For example, take the final arc; there's a scene where Ami and Mako are obliterated by the bad guys, and it's immediately followed by two full pages of Sailor Starlights posing. Jesus Christ! Our girls just died!

The final episode is great. But the previous three or four suck balls. It's basically the same buildup that happens in the first series, where all the girls die off, but much more lame and poorly animated. And the outers' "betrayal" -while maybe a sound strategy on their point of view- was also terrible from a viewer's perspective because you're not fooled for a second.

I liked how the starlights actually damaged Galaxia, didn't expect that.
Outers betrayal was an interesting idea even if yeah you know how it will end.

But the actual best part? Usagi dreaming that the other senshis and Mamo were actually planning something all along, only to be brought back to the harsh reality. That was one hell of a way to show how she is actually breaking

The problem with Uranus and Neptune is that they're so far up their own asses that they think they're in a much more grim series than they are.
"ooh the final boss is so strok and invincible, we'll have to shoulder the burden on ourselves to sacrifice two of our friends to try to double cross and backstab her it's the only way!" fucking retards.
They've watched as their princess overcame impossible odds and saved the world FOUR FUCKING TIMES and they STILL don't have faith in her.
But what REALLY pisses me off is that even if the dykes are that dumb, Hotaru and Setsuna should have more sense and faith than that.

A lot of Sailor Moon manga fans (as in those who are like, exclusively fans of the manga and maybe musicals, not someone who enjoys the manga in addition to other SM stuff) seem to see the '90s anime as almost an insult to the manga's story. Like those who are all about Usamamo or whatever see Manga Usagi, and sometimes Rei and Minako, as being comparatively more dignified and so see the anime versions as a bunch of clowns

I think the manga art style is nice but I also think it's the kind of thing that'd be difficult to translate to animation completely accurately. Not only because of certain poses that are designed more to be viewed as a still drawing (think like images with super long flowing hair hanging in a way that implies it'd be in constant motion in animation), but also just because if you look at certain images Takeuchi drew herself that were then colored in anime style, you realize they'd actually look kinda janky as hell if they were a real anime and not a manga that can get away with being a bit looser. Pic related

I haven't read or watched Twilight but the problem with Sailor Moon's manga is not as much that the story is bad, it's that it's very bare-bones. Every new arc it's just a new bad guy or gal who introduces a few lieutenants who get killed one per chapter, then Sailor Moon uses the crystal and kills them. First it's the silver crystal, then it's two silver crystals, then every other girl gets a crystal, then Mamoru gets a crystal too. It's very repetitive and bland. But the general look and feel of the villains is great, so when the Toei writers take the manga and build it up into seasons, fleshing out the characters and creating a more involving plot, it becomes great.

The original anime already WAS a fairly faithful adaptation. Sure it added a lot of stuff and cut some other stuff but a lot of plot points are similar and those that aren't... aren't even often that good? I think the biggest revelation for me was that the second half of Dream basically WAS adapted as the first arc in Stars anime. I would say the Cosmos movie is still worth watching because that's the most different arc and they put a modicum of effort into that particular movie.

Why did they do this anyway. It's not like SuperS was ever busy with anything else.

Add a bunch of episodes in-between major happenings for a better sense of pacing, make the mood much more lighthearted outside of things that should be taken seriously, no CGI bullshit. And the girls should act more like the 90s anime as well, they are young 14-16 yos, they shouldn't be overly serious and professional with each other.
There you go I saved Crystal, now it looks more like what people actually enjoyed about Sailor Moon while still being shorter and more plot-centric.

They are in a grim series. An inch to the left of Usagi's charmed perspective you see all the cosmic horror and life or death struggle. And the reality that a dumb girl's hax are the only defense they have against it, so better keep her together somehow.

SuperS anime is very much the Chibi-Usa series. The plot revolves around her; she gets to use the gold crystal that belongs to Mamoru, even.
Putting the final part in, which would feature Eternal and have Usagi "defeat" her (using the term loosely here) would've muddled that.
Then again, the problem was trying to center the series around Chibi-Usa and her bratty friends in the first place.
God, what a shitshow. I still recall the episode where Mina is two-timing Tiger Eye and Eagle Eye, the comedic GENIUS of it, and get sad because it's an anomaly and soon we'll be back to a fucking kid trying to do child stuff.

Mina carries the show HARD after Usagi gets a boyfriend and becomes boring. When she gets people to photograph her with Three Lights in compromising positions and then sells them to tabloids is amazing. She even gets Usagi going with it, that's her energy level.

>What is their popularity in universe
Before the series even starts, Sailor V is popular enough to get her vidya. After that, the senshis eventually become known heroines as soon as Sailor Moon starts fighting the first monsters. There are some episodes in the anime where people talk about them, one where Minako specifically talks about Moon and Venus with a kid, and one with in-universe live-action show.
>and have someone figure out their identity
In the first season, there is one guy who knows Ami is Mercury and still didn't die unlike the villains who discovered their identity.

In the first season they made an effort into getting each character to have an interest in at least one guy. Minako's didn't work out and Mako is Mako, but Ami and Rei got some boyfriend-type characters. Ami's was seemingly phased out of existence (the guy who could see the future) but Rei's lives in the temple with her so he pops up every now and then. He's got some fun interactions with Mamoru, when he finds out he used to date Rei before him.
Honestly, it's more normal than the stoic chivalry mindset of being entirely dedicated to defending their princess the manga has going on.

I was actually expecting this to last until the end in one way or another, since first season really wants to push romantic themes as far as possible, and did a pretty good job especially with the Nephrite arc.
ARU did something cool with the ayys at least, giving them one hell of weird relationship where they are lovers pretending to be siblings and getting involved witih the humans. The breakup arc is very lame tho.
I did not care about Uranus and Neptune being dykes.
SuperS is doujin fuel for Chibusa I bet lmao, I don't even want to see how those look like.

Honestly the Sailor Starlights save it in the first half. I still remember the episode where they're filming a sentai movie in the boonies and the rest of the cast goes there to meet a family friend of Rei's. You can see them act relaxed in their downtime while swimming in the river and, especially, when Seiya at one point says "We're gonna borrow the monster costume and use it to scare the girls!" And the other two are like "Dude, YES."
Too bad later they have to be in Plot Mode, so Taiki and Yaten have to become retarded dicks and forget all previous characterization.

People need to remember that the majority of manga consumers are Japanese. Mangas tend to be far more popular than anime adaptions because they're easily digestible due to how Japanese are constantly on the go and commute throughout the day via public transit or walking whether for work, school or leisure. Japanese houses and apartments are notoriously small so people aren't sitting around all day watching television. Thus, to many, the manga is how they see a particular franchise as a whole and how many of them came to be introduced to it.

I meant it as a "romance" plot. Usagi x Seiya was never going to be a thing, for a good number of reasons. Everyone knows this, yet you will be watching an entire "dating" episode and a few more that are very obviously not meant to go anywhere. Why even.

I don't see the Japanese fans acting the way I described in that post. I'm sure some must, but this is mostly something I've seen in English Sailor Moon circles

I'd even say that most Japanese SM art etc. I've seen seems to be based more on the anime than the manga, probably due to how it fleshed out certain characters more

Haruka x Michiru is also my favourite yuri couple. I didn't really expect that until I watched S a few months back, I thought they were just popular back then because yuri didn't offer much yet.
But I was wrong.
