The thing I don’t get about the colony vs Earth setup is the nobility thing. Shouldn’t the colonies be meritocracies with a flat hierarchal structure and shouldn’t it be Earth with it’s masses of under-classes and surplus populations that should have the nobility? I always found this series to be super backwards in that regard, like if Japan was trying to project the Meiji era onto the colonies or something.

Every anime- especially space operas- that posits a "good guy" democratic federation against imperialist war-mongering bad guys that would rather die fighting than sue for peace, the former represent post-war japan and the latter represent imperial japan. especially when the "good guys" are rife with corruption and exploitation and more just the lesser of two evils by a narrow margin
