The thing I don’t get about the colony vs Earth setup is the nobility thing. Shouldn’t the colonies be meritocracies with a flat hierarchal structure and shouldn’t it be Earth with it’s masses of under-classes and surplus populations that should have the nobility? I always found this series to be super backwards in that regard, like if Japan was trying to project the Meiji era onto the colonies or something.

that's exactly it. Every anime- especially space operas- that posits a "good guy" democratic federation against imperialist war-mongering bad guys that would rather die fighting than sue for peace, the former represent post-war japan and the latter represent imperial japan. especially when the "good guys" are rife with corruption and exploitation and more just the lesser of two evils by a narrow margin
